I couldn't figure out where to post t so I'm putting it here.
effect:A Borrowed Coin is signed, and wrapped in tissue paper . A book of matches is given to a spectator and they are asked to light the tissue paper on fire. They do and a bright flash appears making the coin disappear. The spectator is told that the coin is inside the matchbook cover. They look and it is not there. The magician says that it is not in the matchbook but inside the matchbook cover. That’s right...Their signed coin appears within the layers of cardboard of the flap of the book of matches. Does anyone have this effect I know its not very expensive but should I get it?? |

What’s to buy? I didn’t know this was being sold as a trick! It’s an old trick from the late 70’s. It was being performed as coin to business card or coin to matchbook. I don’t know where it was published. I think that everyone just figured out how to perform it after seeing it performed. I watched Pat Page perform it and immediately knew how it was done.
In fact, your description of the routine ought to tell you how it’s done! To make up the props for the routine you will need a pad of flash paper, a tube or jar of contact cement (like rubber cement), and a book of matches (the bigger the better). If you don’t have a coin slide from your days of buying slum magic, you can make one by cutting up an old beverage can. The coin slide, matchbook, and rubber cement make up half of the trick. You need to know a coin fold (found in most kid’s magic books) using the flash paper and you have the other half of the trick. To perform you need a Sharpie so that the borrowed coin can be marked. If it is not marked you are wasting the trick. People will think that you have a duplicate coin and fixed it in the matchbook before you started. This is just too easy to make up to not perform. It is a killer trick to perform for non-magicians. Go for it!

It was a marketed item...I think the name on it was Doug Bennett, "as performed on the Tonight Show by Doug Henning"...

Its one of my favorite effects. You can see me perform a version of it on season 2 of "The Virtual Magician" .
Like you said it is not expensive and I would recommend that you pick it up. The manuscript will teach you how to prep everything properly and also provides some alternative ideas. This was originated as a "coin into business card effect". However, when Doug Henning wanted to perform this on TV he had a problem. He was DOUG HENNING ! He didn't have any stinking business cards. He didn't need them. He needed an alternative and FireTrap was born.

I agree with Mr Murphy. If you take the time to set this effect up it is very strong. If you look in Richard Kaufman's Coin Magic I think there is a Coin in Business Card in there. I used to use this effect at Trade Shows with spectator's business cards.
Good Luck |

The item in question is DOUG BENNET'S "FIRE TRAP". This was performed by DOUG HENNING on THE JOHNNY CARSON SHOW way back when. The routine I'm referring to was copyrighted by DOUG BENNETT IN 1983. Its currently on the market and shouldn't be very hard to locate. I have been performing this routine for about 10 years now. I have included FIRE TRAP in both my close-up and parlor shows. It especially goes over well in a close-up situation. Its not that hard to set up, but it is time consuming if you want to perform it as I do about 10 to 15 times a night. I had my own books of matches printed with my name and phone number on the outside of the matchbook cover. It makes a great give a way. After the effect is over, just let the spectator keep the book. As suggested you can cut up a beverage can or do what I did. I believe I contacted VIKING MAGIC and purchased several dozen coin slides.
