Oh yeah, concerning overexposure of ID. A while back, I did some card tricks for a friend who I hadn't seen in a long time (using a standard deck). To my knowledge this guy has never had any ties to magic. He asked to see my cards, which of course I could let him do. He said he thought it must have been "one of those pressure sensitive decks." At first I didn't even realize what he meant because of the wording he used. That was probably a good thing because it made my reply even more convincing. I played it off like, "really... I've never heard of anything like that. I'll have to check into getting one of those." Then it hit me a few seconds later that he was talking about R&S (whether ID, Brainwave, or whatever other variety). This guy was the epitome of a "layperson" and he had at least a passing knowledge of the ID principle. So, sadly, it may not be too long before ID is as common knowledge to the public as a Svengali deck.

Seems like overkill to use it as an out to me.
why carry an extra deck around when you can just palm the card to your pocket and find it there. or actually.... there are so many funny ways to do an out that would be 100,000 times more entertaining than finding it in an ID. If one brings an ID to use for an out are they pretty sure they're going to mess up?

I knew Larry was gonna say that. They sell them in vending machines out there for Petes sake. And to every body that walks into a magic shop. But all in all I think it is still very strong and not overexposed. I'm not a worker so I don't use it in front of a lot of people. But the ones I have used it in front have no clue as far as I know.

My presentation has nothing to do with the deck being "Invisible" for a moment part of the routine. As a result, I don't think people associate this deck with the "Invisible Deck" sitting in their drawer at home.

I have a magician friend who has seen invisible decks in his local drug store. He performed it for a few friends, and the next day, they came back. And one of them had a deck! I don't know if he exposed it to people, but it is very possible that he could have. I think over all there is just too much exposure in all magic. Not just the invisible deck. I think it should be made harder for lay people to learn the art. It will ruin it forever! I think only real performers, or people serious about it should be able to get theire hands on that type of stuff. In my local Chapters book store, they have Mark Wilsons Complete Course in Magic. That is one of the best books ever. If I performed the cups and balls for someone, they could very easily learn how to do it just by looking in that book. That book should be available to magicians only! Or people who are very serious about the art. I think that it should be harder for the regular public to learn GOOD magic. Little magic kets and stuff is ok. But, there are some awsome things out there available to lay people. And I don't think that should be. Anyway, I got a lot to do, and now I got to go to a darn persons house to do WORK!!!!! Its been a tough day. There was a car PURPOSLY lit on fire in the woods at our school. And last period we were in lock down. The teachers had to lock the doors, and the emergency doors were shut. The cops were chasing the person who lit the car on fire. And I come home, with a twisted ankle, wet clothes, and craky as anything. I got on my PJs and was about to settl;e down and watch lost. Then I remember that I have to make promo pictures for posters, and practice my Adult show, kid show, and restaurant routines. That kindof made me upset. Then, my friend calls me with info that we apparently had TONS of homework, and I am very behind. So now Im going to his house, to get stuff done. Wont be back till at least 9. There goes all hope for relaxing, practicing, taking pics, or watching lost. And, my mom is going out with her friends, and I cant watch it without her. Tomorrow we have to go to my grandparents house for the WHOLE day, on sunday I have to go to paintball. Some of this may sound fun, But I have lots to do. And I need to get it done. For the past 4 months, every week I have been promising myself I would get stuff done. Not even ONE week have I done it. This week I was supposed to lock the doors, turn off the phones, and do nothing so I could get the stuff I need to done. But once again, I have other things to do. So now Im hoping next week I can get these things over with. But I know its not going to happen. Nor the next week, or the one after that. I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET THE RESTAURANT GOING!!!!!!! I am very upset as you can see. So, hopefully, this can make you feel good about your day. This is every week of my life. And its only going to get worse when I get a job. Sorry, I had to let it out! Have a nice day...

If you approach a trick thinking that people may know what it is, you may even tip them off. I have NEVER, NEVER, NEVER been called on an ID, usually because <GASP!> I don't just say "Name any card" then show them the deck.I've never used it in conjunction with a pool table before, like they did in the Mondo Magic series, but I have done similar things. People are going to hate me for saying this but I truly feel that most magicians who think tricks are overexposed do so for one of two reasons, they either lack the creativity to venture away from the standard, comes with the deck instructions or they are upset because they cannot use it to fool other magicians. I truly feel that way, anybody feel differently? -Carlos

Man, I like Wikipedia. It has allot of good info, but it is scary the amount of info is listed under the magic secrets tab with the link provided above. Out of This World, The Pass, Palms, etc, etc. That kinda stinks that it is there for anyone to see. Of course they have to find it first, but still.

In that instance, I didn't have an ID with me, but when I DO use it or Brainwave (or any other gaffed deck for that matter), I never open with it. I always do at least one effect with a standard deck and (without overproving) make sure that the spectator gets to handle the deck (e.g., to shuffle the cards or something). Once the heat's off the deck, then I'll do effects that require gaffed cards/decks.

I love my ID and guess I have been lucky nobody ever thinks it is a trick deck as I switch it in afer a number of card effects...
my Fav....walk in to a pool hall lay one deck on the table (ID) take out another deck and scatter them on the pool table....then get the player to strike the cue ball off any cussions.....where the ball lands is the selection and also the only card flip turned in the other deck which has been sitting there all along!!!! NOT my idea I may add.....but I kill people with it!!! Long live the ID..... |

I severely doubt it will ever REALLY be so overexposed that the deack is useless. The cups and balls, and many rope routines have been around for AGES, where sets are sold to six year olds and the secrets are given out on television. Do people still think a cups and balls routine is magic. Almost every time.
As long as the presetation brings in the audience, and the magician is rehearsed enough not to goof it up, I think we have very little to worry about.

I'm just getting back into magic as a hobby after being away for many years, but I made up a deck similar to the ID (different effect but the same pairs-of-R/S-cards principle) for an idea I had that I thought was pretty clever. I felt that I handled it just fine but my very observant wife who knew nothing of the principle still noticed the double-thick cards right away. I asked her to select a card and she said "I'll take the one under the seven of hearts". Dang it. Oh well, she plays enough poker that she knows her way around a deck of cards pretty well, but I was still surprised that she saw through it so easily...

I love the invisible deck and use it all the time with no problem. I wouldn't worry at all about it.
