Hello all...
I'm playing around with 51 cards to pocket... I love the effect.. But it's not hitting as hard as I think it could.. I know the problem is my patter (or should I say, lack of) Could anyone help me with suggestions? Thank you. Shawn.

Use the patter provided or come up with something new?
You already said your problem is lack of patter.... so I think everyone would suggest to get patter. |

I'm sorry I guess my post wasn't clear...
I was looking for some patter sugestions... I can't find anything that really works for me.. I was wondering if anyone that is currently performing the effect had a patter line that worked for them... Shawn.

You need to be more specific on what you want. First, where did you learn the routine? Are you learning the effect from David Williamsons book or DVD? If so, what is wrong with the patter provided there? If not, what point is it you are looking for patter? The whole routine? The first card jumps? The whole deck jumps? If I remember rightly, I saw Gazzo do this routine where he talked about different magicians ways of getting a card to a poacket and revelaing it, it was quite funny seeing the Daryl card to pocket, then the Michael Ammar card to pocket etc

David Williamson's effect is great. If your looking for patter advice, try also posting in the Words We Use forum.

I think I saw Micheal Close do that on his workers one. It was worked into a trick where the card traveled to the pocket the first two times and the 51 traveled the third time. I thought it killed. Hope you can get acess to that video as I think it would really help.

I actually picket it up at the Ammar Lecture a couple months ago.. After the lecture me and a bunch of guys ended up in the hotel lobby playing with some card stuff... One of them had a bunch of manuscripts for 51 cards to pocket... It didn't come with patter... What I was looking for a cover line for the moment I'm the deck is jumping.. Sorry I wasn't clear.... Thanks...

51 cards to pocket is a specific routine of David Williamsons... there are other "deck ending up in pocket" effects, but "51 cards to pocket" generally refers to williamson's routine(where 51 selected cards jump to the pocket).
I would suggest you buy Williamson's work to find his patter for it... You don't really need a "cover" line, the work is handled by the handling.... if you are really hurting, try just saying its jumping again your pocket but get the wrong card, then pull out another, and another(all wrong) pull the whole deck out and reveal. |

With most routines that go with deck to pocket that follow cards to pocket, usually, the first 2 times, the selected card jumps to the pocket. The 3rd time, the deck goes to the pocket. The patter here usually for when the deck goes is'And your card goes to my pocket, oh wait, wrong card, here it is, no wait, this one, I think I have too many cards'. This point you just take random cards out from the 51 cards in your pocket expecting them to be the selected card, then take the whole deck out showing it has travelled, and the selected card was the one left in the hand

I believe that Don England was the first to publish the concept of all but the selection disappears. Check his Phase 51 from Technical Knockouts. Does anyone know of an earlier version of this concept??

Frank Shields was doing this back in the early sixties. He detailed it in letters to Ed Marlo, and dozens of magicians who visited Frank over the years, including the Professor, saw him use this as a finish for the "Card to Pocket". One way Frank would end was by saying, "It's easy getting your card to my pocket. It's hard figuring out which one it is, with all these in the way!"

If I didn't come with patter now is your chance to be creative. Or you can buy the Williamon's dvd Dave 2
If you come up with your own patter you can personalize the routine more. |

I agree to personalise the routine. But, just because it is my favorite card trick to perform. Here are a few things I have noticed.
One is that it needs to be direct. I also have played with multiple cards to pockett. Which has its pluses, but the more direct following of one card which goes to the pocket twice and then the deck instead of the card has a better reaction for me. Basically it is the "homing card," by Carlyle from "Stars Of Magic," with the deck, or 51 cards, going to the pocket instead of the selection tacked onto the end. What I am working with now has no extra story. It is about an object which has gone to another place and the dicotomy between reality and our dreams. The dream of whether an object can be made to move from one place to another. In the end it is directly about perception. They know you got that deck in there somehow. And they know you MUST have somehow diverted them to be able to do it, not only while they were watching, but while you were drawing attention to that pocket. It is an effect I would like to hear Tommy Wonder speak about, because it reads to me like the sort of Magic he seems to strive toward. So you don't need a corny side story. I do talk about the card jumping up my sleave and down my other sleave faster than they can see it. This kind of obviously wrong story makes the dirty moments, where you show them the card from your pocket but only the back, fit with the overall tone of the performance. I think it is important that you use a one handed top palm to get the card from the deck as well. Otherwise I worry it is to easy to follow. Also start with two cards in that pockett already. In the end I ask them to get the card out of my pocket. I ask them if there are more cards, (I don't wait for a "no" here, I just go into the steal and load of the pocket, most times they say no, but when they don't nothing is really sacraficed. But you don't want to break the rythem of what is going on. If you wait or break rythem they are likely to watch the hand you don't want them to see. As I bring out the cards little by little:One wrong card, (they think I have screwed up,) A nother wrong card, (they think I really screwed up, dieing here.) Then a whole bunch of cards, cards falling on the floor. more cards, moare cards... I say things like, "no, it was a red card right, a spade was it, no not the six of hearts, diamonds, right?" Then I realize that only one card is in my hand and I am very surprised by this. This is the heardest part for me because I want to really be surprised, and it is very hard to convince yourself that it is a surprising thing. Then I spell it out for them. "Oh wait NAME, I know what went wrong, the deck jumped instead, and all that is left is this one card. The Blah blah Blah? and then they freak out. I love the looks on their faces during, and after this effect. Good luck with it. I know it is very powerfull and beatiful.

My version of the Carlyle Cards to Pocket with the whole deck going to the pocket was created about 1984. It was based on a move from Johnny Paul's video tape. He did a shower of the cards and then a production from his waist band.
I wanted to do the Carlyle Cards to Pocket without signed cards, and the vanish of the whole deck was a convincer that the cards were actually going to the pocket and not just duplicates. My version of the routine is available here under "Cards to Pocket": http://www.whithaydn.com/coppermine/thum......p;page=4 |

Steve Ehlers' new DVD (Arizona Card Expert) has a great Cards to pocket routine called "Travellers Under Pressure". This is a well thought out, motivated routine with a great story line.

Is there a major difference in effect between the Williamson handling and Giobbi's Homing Card Plus from Card College, which also concludes with the rest of the deck going to the pocket?
