Hi there,
I've recently come up with a 3 coin vanish routine incorporating a couple of sleights from various magicians: http://ihome.ust.hk/~vcheung/geek.mpg I wonder if anyone using the exact moves but in my limited knowledge I haven't seen people doing this. So I'm boldly giving it a name: Geek Why? It is actually inspired by a routine by Shoot Ogawa called Nerd, so I just use a synonym. These 2 effects bears some similarities in which: 1. Only 3 coins are used, and they are real and normal. 2. Both require quite some skills~~ =) However, the constructs and the skills involved are quite different. I'd say Nerd is a bit more difficult. The production part is a modified version (not sure how much I've modified...) of the sequence Daegs taught me in a session, so thanks man! Sorry for the file size (5.X MB)... please be paitent. Any comments are welcome, thanks in advance.

Thanks ShawnB.
You can learn Nerd in Shoot's DVD called "Shoot in Hollywood", mind you, it's not easy =)

ShawnB, my best wishes to you~ It's challenging, but the reward is enormous. I'm using Barber Halve Dollars and they are not processed in anyways. They are more than 100 years old (!) and have a dull silver look. I really love these coins.
Terrell, sorry... it's a 5.X MB file so you'll need some time to fully download it. I believe you can use some download program to download the whole file, or, like bob suggests, you can pull the slide back, or pause it and let the buffering complete. Bob, thanks for pointing that out.

The first vanish looks a bit odd. It seems you take the coin rather deeper in your hand than if you were really taking it. Almost like you're tucking it into a hole in the palm of your right hand.
The reproductions look very nice. Other than that, I have an issue with "take a coin transfer the fan to the other hand" stuff that's typical of most "hanging coins" sorts of effects, but that's a minor gripe. If that bothers you too check out R. Paul Wilson's ebook 13 for a routine that avoids that back and forth nicely. cheers, and thanks for sharing! |

Very good work man...
I would suggest you looking into getting Rune Klans Three Pieces Of Silver video if you haven't already. His work is heavily influenced by Gary Kurtz work. As Bill Duncan already stated, the vanish of the first coin looked a bit off, but didn't take away from the overall look of the routine. Bill also hinted on a Paul Wilsons coin routine in "13". Rune also has a nice 3 coin vanish that also avoids the pitfall of the back and forth handlings... I can't wait to see some more magic from you

Thought it was nice, but I sorta agree along the lines of what wsduncan said. It looks a lot like you are "putting" the coins into your hands or hiding them there more so than vanishing them. I never got the feeling that the coins vanished/disapeared, but just that I couldn't see them, if that makes any sense. I still thought they were in your hand, not exactly vanished...If you know what I mean. Still it was good and I too look forward to more stuff from you.

If it's not possible to avoid that initial look, it might be amusing to use the old gag about having had a secret trap door implanted in the hand and make every vanish look like you're "secretly" putting a coin into the slot.
Layman might find that amusing, and it would justify not simply showing your hands really empty before the reproductions, since you're not trying to fool them, you're just demonstrating how the trap door works. I think it could be an entertaining routine. |

Thanks for the compliments Terrell.
wsduncan, you are right about the first vanish. Actually what I was trying to do is to cover most part of my left hand, perhaps this creates the impression of putting the coin deep. Also I was doing it a bit slower than it should look like (still not 100% efficient with the routine...), may be this also creates that impression. I'll work on that and perhaps modify the taking motion. As for the "take a coin transfer the fan to the other hand", I suppose you are referring to what I did right after the first vanish. This could be an issue, but what I did was mainly to "show my hands empty" by transferring coins and flipping them (and show that they are real~~). Anyway, thanks for your comments and suggestions. Will also consider the "slot" gag, this actually suits my style. I think for the time being I'll make 2 versions, one is using this gag and cointinue with the "deep put"; the other is modify it a bit and practise more so I can do it without saying a word and make it like real magic (just like Nerd). Godhandz, thanks for the encouraging words. Yes I do have the "Three Pieces of Silver". It is nice. I'll re-watch it over and over to see what can be improved. I don't have Paul Wilsons coin routine in "13", but will think about that as well. And thanks Mb217 for pointing that out. Actually I showed it to a friend of mine (a layman) and she also gives similar comments like: "I think you are hiding the coins somewhere, though I don't see them". I believe the current routine better comes with some talking both to distract a bit and justify some of the time delays. I do have a similar plot using 1 gimmick coin which IMO looks a bit cleaner, but this one "feels" better since I'm using real coins~ ha ha
