I have been doing the Be Honest, What Is It? routine for thirty years. My patter has changed slightly over time, but it is still pretty much based on the concept that Eddie Fechter used.
M.: "For the first time in your life, be honest with me. What's that card?" S.: "Five of Hearts." M.: (Looking very surprised) "That's very good. That is very honest! Be honest again, what is this card?" S.: "Five of Spades." M.: That is wonderful. You really are honest!...at least when the evidence is staring you in the face... If I turn this card face down, can you still be honest? If I turn this other card face down can you still be honest? What if I do this. (switch) Can you still be honest? What card do you honestly think is in my hand?" S.: "Five of Hearts." M.: "And what card is in your hand?" S.: "Five of Spades." M.: "So you honestly think I switched them?" S.: "Yes." M.: "Turn your card face up. (magician points with card in his hand at Ace of Hearts in spectator's hand, as spectator turns over card, the magician makes the top change. As spectator looks back up from his surprise, the magician turns over the card in his right hand, showing that it, too, has changed--to an Ace of Spades. He sticks this card in the spectator's hand next to the other. M.: "When you weren't looking, I hid the Five of Hearts over here, (top palm the top card and produce from right pants pocket. The next card is Loewey palmed and pulled out from the left pants pocket) and the Five of Spades over here. Honesty seems to come easy for you. It is a real challenge for me." |

Thanks, Whit Haydn for your presentation! that's it! Normally we should write nothing more about it, because it is so direct to the point!
Again, thanks! |

I like the routine, with the added kicker of the cards appearing in the pockets.
saying that, I still don't think it is magic, nor will your audiances. If your looking for "magic" this isn't it. If your looking for a good trick then this is a good one.
If you're reading this you're my favourite magician.

Here's my lazy answer:
I generally use Dave Williamson's "The Memory Test" patter from "Magic Farm"... |

The reproduction of the cards from the pocket is not an added kicker. That is the way Eddie did it. He would palm both cards to the same pocket, however, and produce them singly from there.
Nordatrax, you are flat wrong. Spectators react very strongly to what they perceive as a magical effect. They think at first that the whole thing is a skill trick, but when the cards in their hands change completely, and two cards fly instantly to two different pockets, it is very magical--much more than they can conceive of as happening by skill or mechanical means. If you mean that the audience is not convinced that "real magic" actually happened, then I agree with you. But then, that would not be magic--that would be charlatanry. |

Thanks Whit,
You just sold a copy of 'Fechter, The Magic of Eddie Fechter'. This is a 265 page book. I am going to start with 'Be Honest, What Is It?' and spend the Summer working my way up. What a classic and what great magic. Best Wishes, Dave
