I asked this question in the cards section, and got some responses but they said I should ask it here. What do you guys think is the best Al Mann book or effect and where can it be found? Thanks for the help.

Cody:
Good question. I had the same question when I read Stephen Minch's preface to "PRISM." He did a nice overview of the history of published mentalism material. He praised some of Mann's early work but suggested as time went on Mann's output got less useful but more expensive. I was considering writing Minch for specifics but never got around to it. So I eagerly await responses to your question. Bennett NY NY |

As Paul Alberstat noted in another thread, Al Mann's "Purloined Thought" could be considered his best book (and I am in full agreement with Paul). It is a comprehensive hardback collection of articles concerning the history of the center tear and descriptions of various associated CT and billet techniques. Unfortunately, only 200 copies exist and few owners wish to part with their copy.
However, Al Mann's body of work comprises a plethora of techniques and routines which run the entire gamut of the craft. You will need to be more specific with your requirements before anyone can suggest the "best" trick or effect in the Mann collection. IMO, his writings contain many gems (as well as clunkers). Joe Z.

I ask the question in a very general sense. In other words, what Al Mann book or effect has helped you guys most or has been most entertaining?

BREAKTHROUGH has Walter Gibson's brilliant and easy Headline Prediction. Easier than Marvoyan's.

Hi
Is Breakthrough the name of the book or the effect? It is amazing that a thread about such a key figure can get such a weak response I tried a similar thread and got no response Does anybody know why? My favourite book is Maximus It has a good overview of the field of/for people interested in Psychic type mentalism and seemingly impromptu and propless effects TJ |

The Donovan Papers, for the excellent work by Ted K......yum yum!. And High Domain for Gemels messages...... Dave |

Hi TJ,
Cistella is an impossible looking Prediction that is inside a locked box that the spectator can open and remove etc...... Gemels Messages is a method for the CT where whole question(s) can be accessed, truly a thing of beauty....Al had a wonderful take on the diffrence between the Fortune-teller and the Mentalist....the former give a general read but the latter gives specific answers to thoughts and questions....how true. I would agree that Purloined Thought is Al Mann's best book. Many of Al Manns's manuscripts dealt with billets and peeks. The Purloined Thought has the combined material from those manuscripts for the most part and more. It may or may not be the most definitive book on billets but its *** close !!!!!!!!1

Hi
Can anybody give the names of any books that aren't on the list at the link I gave http://www.zem.demon.co.uk/almann.htm ? Or give a description of the books named that don't have a description? Cheers TJ |

The Trioynm Effect... his version of the 3 billet test, maybe my favorite of all.
Acidus 2.... billet reading by sleight of hand...btw, the 'improvement' is the addition of a paper-clip. Acidus Plus.... for the "Azonic Force", a no-switch billet test. the Tesseract... another 3 billet test, this one without envelopes.... the improved version is much improved, under the name "the missing tesserae" Many of his works on gaffed envelopes are very useful. At the time of his passing he had a completed manuscript on envelopes sitting on his desk that was meant to be his 3rd hardcover book. The Purloined Thought is a collection of his work with torn billets, both covert and overt, but doesn't include some of his best billet ideas. The books on Foster and Reese are great, as is "the Test of Thoth", the table billet technique used by them. The book on effects with newspapers is good, especially for the brilliant "the Code". The Lexicon Phenomena is a great book test, as is 'the Da**ed Thing' ( which is based on 'the Code' ) I loved 'Maximus'. There's other good material and entertaining stuff, but this is what comes to mind for now. Some of his ideas were absolute crap though. The brilliant stuff makes up for it. Reese p.s. I sold most of my Al Mann collection years ago. I have nothing of his for sale any longer. |

Quin Taces is my favourite Al Mann book(let) - I have only read about 20 of his book(lets) - of course this is imho and specifically given that I like mentalism with no props except perhaps our minds... The work by Leo Boudreau in here is nothing short of incredible imho.

Quin Taces takes good presentational skills, but it is a dynamic effect. Al suggested that it is best in a setting like a school. If you can find a copy buy it!
