"The Joining" http://www.members.aol.com/pierce603/magic.html

Jeff Pierce has put together a 6 page PDF document containing his ideas on linking a finger ring to a rubberband. Jeff's inspiration is Chris Kenner's "Missing Link" (Totally Out of Control).

This document basically contains three sections:

"The Joining" - How to cause a ring to almost visibly jump onto a rubberband.

"The Un-Joining" - This allows you to have a spectator pull the linked ring off of the rubberband themselves.

"Rubber Band Split" - This is a bonus item in which a single rubberband is split into two.
Linking a ring on a rubberband can be very magical. I think the best part of Jeff's publication is that he has worked out a way to have the spectator pull the ring off the rubberband themselves! I can see "The Un-Joining" making its way into rubberband magic routines fairly easily. For a little effort, one can add a nice addition to any ring and rubberband routine.

The bonus item is a little hard to understand at first read due to no pictures, but turns out to be a clever way to show a single rubberband and split it into two.

This electronic document is 6 pages and contains 11 pictures. For a price of $5, I recommend this for anyone who has performed, or is planning on performing, a ring and rubberband routine.

I can also say that this is a very nice, very usable effect. It is a very magical looking effect, especially the ending where the spectator pulls the ring off themself. Very well-done.

Logan, unfortunately there is no video available as of yet. One day I will get around to it though.

The method is completely different from the Govan effect.

The effect of all of these routines is similar--A borrowed ring penetrates on and then off of a rubber band. Other versions are out there, most notably Bill Kalush's, which spawned a plethora of variations. Jeff's is unique and, IMO, cleaner and more convincing than any version I have encountered. And it's only $5! When's the last time you've seen a decent routine at that price? It's a well-written, photo-illustrated manuscript.

The visual appeal of the ring leaping onto the band made me want to learn the routine. It is a visual that you will want to add to any ring and band routine you do.

HN Review 33: The Joining - Jeff Pierce

AD:

Jeff Pierce has put together a 6 page PDF document containing his ideas on linking a finger ring to a rubberband. "The Un-Joining" - This allows you to have a spectator pull the linked ring off of the rubberband themselves. REVIEW:

Another trick from a Magic Café user. The effect is basically Chris Kenner's Missing Link (from his "Out of Control" book, and also published in Dan Harlan's Rubber Bands trilogy), using a ring instead of a second band. The unlinking procedure IMHO can give away the method.

Overall rating: weak

I'm not sure about that Harvey. If done well I think the unlinking gives the illusion of melting through the ring. I'm still working on that part, and am hoping to do it in a way that definitely won't give it away.

Thanks to all for the kind words.
Harvey Nerzof, you say "another trick from a Café Member" like that's a bad thing.

While true that Kenner's "Missing Link" wasd the inspiration, The setup is different and requires less handling of the bands.

You also say "The unlinking procedure IMHO can give away the method." Of course this is true if you don't practice the timing. Try spending more than a few minutes with it and it will come to you.

Thank you

I, too, had difficulty imagining how to do the unlink without tipping the method by flashing the condition of the RB. We're not supposed to discuss exact methods here, but generally, I found that if you keep the band spread tight until the spec starts to pull down, the tension is maintained on the bottom half of the RB and nothing can be seen. Then you can bring the upper part of the RB together while they are still tugging down maintaining the tension, and the release is easy, very clean, and amazingly deceptive.

I agree with MagicMan1957: If done corectly, they are watching the ring, and the effect is killer.

Thanks for the magic lesson, Jeff! (If my despription reveals too much or is too specific, Jeff, let me know and I'll edit or delete it.)

Dr. K,
If the spectator is directly in front of you, you can shift your hands, pushig the left forward and the right backwards effectively narrowing the point of view between the two hands.

Enjoy!
