The Eric Anderson false riffle shuffle is great if you can get it down. I know there are a couple good ones on the Dai Vernon Revelation series. Also, check out Royal Road. There was a shuffle called the Optical Shuffle or something like that that works well and is very easy to do.

The Heinstein Shuffle is pretty good as well.

Yo can also use a simple deck switch or a stripper deck if you don't want to practise.
Normally I do a faro shuffle with a invisible strip out, that looks "clean". |

Depends on how you work. If you are using tables then go learn the Zarrow, and learn it well. If you don't have a table handy then the green shuffle is the way to go. You must also consider your performance and how you want to look. Are you eccentric? Because Lennart Green has a number of shuffles that aren't the norm, but are very convincing. Are you a gambling guy? Because then you should put in the time on a pushthrough strip out, or a zarrow. How are you going to use them? You could use a blind overhand shuffle and everything would be copasetic if your personality is strong enough. The best shuffle for you depends a lot on who you are as a performer, and what you plan to do with the effects.

The overhand shuffle that Tamariz teaches in his book is relatively easy to do and deceptive--give it a try.

I use Guy Hollingworth's in the hand's waterfall shuffle from his book. Based on a Max Malini concept, I believe.

I do the shuffle described by Osterlind (on the knee) that I too learned out of Tarbell. However, I saw guys doing the Zarrow and liked it alot, so I adapted the aforementioned to throw in the Zarrow concept. I didn't like the noise the old-fashioned one (Tarbell) made at times because the stock sometimes pop when coming apart.
So--I do a Sorta-Zarrow on the knee (or table). I riffle the corner leaving a little top stock above the riffle, "sloppily" push some of the top stock over (retaining the order) and push the rest "together" Ala Zarrow-style. Works for me, but then again when I do card tricks I don't look like I can do card tricks. I can do one handed cuts and fans and some other flourishes, but never before or during a card trick that fries someone's brain. I saw a video where Lennart Green did a false suffle very similar to the way I do mine but do not recall what he called it. When I work a full deck stack I do corner short to locate the top card. I'll do a false riffle shuffle, do a few running cuts in the hands--overhand shuffle style, and then locate the top card with the corner short and cut fairly to it. Knock on wood, but I've never been caught by anyone yet (and I will jam with some fairly decent card magicians from time to time--you know the type that can do some sleights but shy away from palms, passes, and memorized stacks). I think that one should learn a couple ways to false riffle, maybe a false overhand, and then just work out there own way. Magic that is personalized is the best way, I think. I have always (since 6th grade when I started) reworked tricks to fit and suit the way my hands and brain works and they just never seem exactly like the instructions or video way. Anyhow, a Zarrow is great for when you have or can improvise a surface. Otherwise I reccomend corner shorting or scalloping a locator card and doing overhand cuts that look like your shuffling then cut the "top" card to the top. |

There is another thread going in "The Workers" category and I posted there on a tabled peel shuffle(as best I can describe it- PM for a complete description). But Lew Brooks False False Shuffle is wonderful for a stacked deck. It can be found in "Stack Attack." Hope this helps.

If you learn the real handling on Herb Zarrow's shuffle you are set... but PLEASE ... PLEASE do not over shuffle... it kills the flow of the routines.

Defiently the Zarrow shuffle. Its by far the most convincing one I have seen.
An amatuer practices untill he gets it right, a professinal practices untill he can't get it wrong.
Don't wait for oppurtunity to knock, throw open the door, grab it by the throat and drag it inside kicking and screaming. Magically yours |

I'd also recommend the Zarrow. As for learning it, there is a DVD available of Herb teaching it himself.
And for an in the hands shuffle I'd suggest, my local friend, Karl Hein's Heinstein shuffle. It's looks and sounds perfect. |
