I've recently fallen in love with the shuffle bored routine. The two versions I've seen which inspired me were Lennart Green's Rainman and Aldo Colombini's Pre-Deck Ability.
The Aldo Colombini version was presented as impossible magical predictions. In the explanation, he said that the climax was so strong that there was no choice but to use it as a closer. On the other hand, Lennart Green used it as an opener to a card set (with a comedy/talk portion to lead into it). His routine is based on memorizing orders of cards and incredible gambling skill. Anyways, my question for discussion: Where would you place shuffle bored in your act? Would you open/close with it? Would you put it with other gambling pieces, card magic pieces, or something that had nothing to do with gambling or cards? Also, when would you bring out the final prediction? Right before you reveal it? At the beginning of the routine? Maybe several routines before? By all means, discuss, debate, go wild. James |

John Bannon in Dear Mr. Fantasy has my favorite presentation of the effect, called Wait Until Dark. It's done as a blindfold-type real time prediction with a kicker. That version is definitely a closer to a card set; for a mentalism set I think it could be a very strong middle piece.

I agree with landmark. Wait until dark is a perfect closer and you can set the prediction just minutes before the trick.

In the explanation of 'Wait Until Dark', Mr.Bannon says he simplified the shuffling proceedure. But I think this simplication decreases deceptiveness of mixing.
I would use the shuffling proceedure used by Aldo Colombini together with Bannon presentation. The above is my guess as I have never performed Bannon veresion. So it is possible Mr.Bannon's simplified proceedure is enough. If you have experienced both shuffling proceedures for lay audiences, please let us know how you think. Hideo Kato |

Does anybody besides Lennart Green use Lennart Green's Rosetta Shuffle in this routine?
Right now I'm leaning towards using his Rainman framework that it's a demonstration of shuffle tracking. And I know for him everything unnatural looks so natural, but I think that straight riffle shuffles (done by the performer, so they can theorize that I was doing some kind of stacking proceedure all along) would suit a gambling presentation better. |

I like Aronson's procedure on his new DVDs. Each spectator cuts their portion of the deck in half, with just one exchange of packets.
A nice subtlety which adds to the apparent randomness of the mixing: After the spectator cuts his portion in half, he is instructed to turn either half face up and exchange it. Just a little thing, but it seems to add a lot. |

I like exchanging packets more than once. I think it makes the effect stronger to exchange packets that have both face up and face down cards. The Bannon layout makes it easy for the participants to do that without getting confused.

My Jeopardy routine is used as an opener of my card act. While it is extremely strong, it provides plenty of interaction that builds the energy of the audience. I am indebted to Simon.

Hi everyone , Are you talking the effect similar to Control the Chaos in Mnemonica?
Is Control the Chaos the same to Simon's or Ramon Rioboo's ? Tamaris said the idea is form them. And Can someone introduce me Ramon Rioboo? snowboard |

I want to put in a plug for Paul Green's Jeopardy routine (and his DVD "In the Trenches" in general). His Jeopardy routine provides a great presentation that really keeps the audience involved and is just plain fun. Instead of Paul Green's "unfolding" prediction (which is great), I made up small cards that have the "Jeopardy" style backs (e.g., Card Tricks for 200, Card Tricks for 400, Double Jeopardy, etc.) with the necessary "questions" on the reverse. I ask for a category as we start to play (after the shuffling)...there is only one, and then an amount (there is only one). It provides some great comedy moments and amounts to a very powerful and entertaining effect and presentation. If your listening, thanks Paul!

Shuffle-Bored is Simon Aronson's creation. Ali Bongo added the folding prediction revelation. In SImon's original version, it is completely magician's hands off, with the spectators making all the cuts--including the initial one, something not possible with the pre-written prediction version. Both versions have their pros and cons, but the basic credit to this brilliant trick is Simon's, which inspired others to go further with it.

And Aronson's version was inspired by or based on or has relation with a Hummer trick.

It's Hummer's 'Face up Prediction' which was the original trick 'Shuffle Bored' was based on (or inspired or has relation with as I mentioned). The methods are different, but basic principle is same.
