Here is a video I made of Sal Piacente's great routine Memory Opener, which can be found on his Expert Card Magic DVD's. Enjoy and give feedback.

Nicely done, especially the first half or so... a little slow towards the end. Good that your dad helped you out!

I like the routine, and you handled it well
Only thing I disliked, was that when the spectator was shuffling, you seemed really stressed to take the cards from him. Ah well, other than that, all good!

Don't tell me you forgot it? It is a great opener for a pseudomemory/gambling themed presentation. I second Deflare, well handled but you did look a little wide eyed at the shuffle. It is worth trying to sell the idea that this is a memory effect using powerful techniques. I use a patter line around an obscure memory system that allows a card mechanic to remember cards unusually quickly. I build the effect from there. Finding the card/s can be a bit tricky and its easy to create 'dead' air time as you search through the fanned cards. An engaging patter line really helps with this. I too love Sals work on his magic lecture notes DVD and I have constructed an interesting and enjoyable (for me at least) routine beginning with his memory opener, following on with Encore, the Sal/Forte Ace Cutting Routine, the MacDougal Stack Outdone, a short 3 Card Monte Session a/la Darwin Ortiz (I learned the basic moves from Sal's Monte DVD) and finally either Rollover Aces or the Vernon Poker Deal with Sals ending. Its all great stuff and really establishes you as an incredibly skillful card handler which I am not. Thanks for sharing.

The only reason I was taking the cards back from him quickly, it really does not matter how much he shuffles, was because I was using a program that had a time restriction. So, that's the reason, but all in all, the routine plays so well to laymen, especially after the shuffle, and by the way, for those of you who do not know the trick, my dad does not know how to false shuffle so it is a regular riffle shuffle.
By the way, Neomagic, how did you find the video? Cody Fisher |

Listen cody,
sorry to be soo hard on you, put I just didn't like the slow pestentaion of the effect. Your patter isn't so great in fact instead of going through the whole deck, just do it with the first thirteen and end it otherwise it is just as easy and I think better to use the borris wild deck or something of that sort (no offence to sal). Keep working |

Rambam, I agree, my patter was a little slow. My personality does not shine through very well. But I do take a bit of offence towards Sal, who is a friend of mine, when you critisize the contruction of the effect. Can you borrow a Boris Wild deck? Personally, I don't like to use marked cards and I think this and every other effect on his DVD's are great. So, if you don't have them, I recommend taking a look and realizing your error. Critisize my performance all you want, but the effect does not deserve critisism in my eyes and I think laymen would say the same.

This method is very easy. I can borrow a deck and go away for 2 minutes and stack it. My memory is becoming good enough,with the help of Sal's and Lorayne's work that I may actually be able to memorize that amount of cards in the future. This method is very easy by the way.

Hi Rick,
Your idea of using marked cards is an intriguing one and could well increase the power of the effect. However, you have to realise that this effect is very hard hitting as it stands. The lack of suit may help to dampen the suspicion of a marked deck and bring the effect back into the realms of plausibility. With value and suit being named from a glimpse of 13 cards in less than a second I can imagine some people suspecting a marked deck. My own routine involves a deck switch from the 3 Card Monte to the Vernon or Rollover Aces closer and so handing out the deck at the end might be a way round this. All food for thought. Hey Mago,
I think mnemonica is a bit advanced for cody. I mean learning a full memorized stack and being able to shuffle it and cut it by the spectator is a great effect, but it is very hard. Too advanced, and cody, if you think that telling the spectator the suit is a give away of a marked deck, then when using a marked deck, just don't say the suit! |
|||||||||
Cody Fisher Special user 884 Posts |
Well Rambam, one, I don't think it is two advanced. I am already able to memorize full decks of cards. Second, if you are only going to say the value anyway, why not do it with a regular deck of cards rather than putting the money down for a marked deck that, when it gets old, will require another larger payment rather than 2 bucks. Your entitled to your opinion. I just would rather use a regular deck.
