When I purchased my first cups and balls, I received a poem that started out "rub a dub dub three men in three tubs went sailing out to sea in tub #1, tub #2 and tub #3... and went alonge nicely with the routine. But I have since forgotten it. Does anyone happen to know it? Thanks. If it's here already and I missed it someway when I searched, sorry.

Check the Mike Skinner issue of Genii magazine from around 2000...if I'm not mistaken, that was Mike's patter...

It is by Jack Bateman. Phil Willmarth owns it now.

This was standard patter at Zeezo's Magic Castle in Denver for selling this trick. I will try to contact someone who remembers this. You are right, it was very entertaining. The iambic rhythm of the piece was what sold it. I know the first lines are broken up like this:
Rub a dub DUB (dump the balls in your hand)
three men in three TUBS (put first ball down) went sailing OUT (second ball) to sea (PAUSE)(in rhythm with the verbal pause - third ball)
in tub #ONE (first cup goes down) tub #TWO (second cup) and ALSO in tub #THREE (third cup)

The beauty of this rhyme is working within the rhythm. (The capitalized words are just for your own cue. They are not meant to be spoken loudly.) Everything fits so beautifully, almost like a dance.

I will try to find the rest of the poem.

Created by Jack Bateman, whereupon it went to Gene Gordon, and then to Phil Wilmarth. It is a beautiful routine. I have the patter, but as Bill Palmer stated, it is owned by Phil , so I am not at liberty to divulge it to you. It does require 5 balls.

Thanks for all the replies. I finally found my copy. I suppose a less than ethical magician sold it to me, unless his is a slight variation. The paper it is typed on says it's by "Dave Mann."

I should add that I paid an extra $5 for the poem, so I would take this to mean the poem I received is probably a different version the above mentioned patters. Sorry for the double post, I don't see a way to edit my previous post.

Even if it is a slight variation, it wouldn't be legal. It would have to be major. However, I don't think David would knowingly pinch someone else's work. He probably thought it was in the public domain.

That isn't Iambic. Iambic is da - DAH, da - DAH. The bateman poem is da-da-da-DAH, da, da, da, da, DAH.

I can't find what it is, most sites go up to dactylic which is trisylabbic.

For those interested, the patter with each move was published in Genii, Nov.7, 2000 issue which was a tribute to Michael Skinner. The article describes an interesting way Skinner had for making this seemingly childish presentation "delightful" to an adult audience.

Am not familiar with the routine, but it seems a bar of soap might make a nice final load.

Kotah,
I don't think it would fit this particular routine. However, I like your idea. How about a routine that ends with three final loads...water, a bar of soap, and a rubber ducky. Oh, what fun!

Archie McPhee has Red Devil Duckies in his catalog. For what it's worth.

Pablo,

I believe Phil Willmarth has the rights to this now. Perhaps contacting him would be the way to go. Now, how do you go about that? you ask. Hmmmm, off the top of my head, I'm not sure, but I'd bet someone around here might have his conact information.

Yes, but if you get it off you tube, you don't have the right to perform it, because you haven't paid for it.

Buy the DVD. Support the artist.
