Hi guys, I just came back from FISM 2006, and I had a great time. At FISM, a new DVD by the Swedish magician Tom Stone was released. Here follows a short review of the DVD.
So, I opened the plastic warper of the DVD, almost aggresively. I had to see this. I have seen Tom perform a few times, and I know his material is really good. So I started up my DVD Player, and got ready to be entertained.
The DVD is not like the regular magic DVD's you usually buy, with a boring studio. This was shot at a bar in Norway (I think), and the setting and atmosphere feel really relaxed. A big + for that.
Now for the routines, I will give a small description and thought on each of the effects.
* A Toast for Charon - Based on Dai Vernon's original Silk and Silver. This handling is great, with logical actions for each move. It also ends with a big surprise at the end, which almost made me crap myself.
* Gold Wielder - Here are the linking fingerrings, using no stooge! Now this routine is clever, very very well constructed. It made me go "Wow, now that is ingenious". Strongly reccomended for those who wan to do The linking finger rings, but do not wish to use a stooge.
* Occhamman Now - Tom's take on Brother John Hamman's "The Signed Card". This routine uses a paperclip for an extra convincer, very nice.
* Time Operator - I first read about this routine in Tom's magazine "Enigma", and the effect is very strong, with a touching patter. Nice to see it in action. You basically tell a story about the first deck of cards you had. And you lost a card and used the Joker as a displacement card. In the end, the spectator finds the very same card you lost when you were a child.
* The Hoarders - This is Tom's version of Roy Walton's "Collectors", and it fits me perfectly. It's fast, visual and stylish. Perfect!
* Reality Glitch - This is a sandwich routine where the Sandwich appears in a quite unexpected place. The routine uses some basic misdirection, and it will literally fool the crap out of anyone.
* Monty Walks Again - I read this one also in "Enigma", but as I am not a coinmagician, I never really went through it all. However, now that I've seen this trick performed, it makes me want to start with coins aswell. Very very nice transposition with a borrowed ring and 5 coins.
* Ambivalent Travellers - This one floored me. I also like the new way of doing the Travellers, using only one card, still it goes into 4 separate pockets.
* Bonus section - Thisone is great. It features some nice tricks and Behind the Scenes-footage for the DVD.
The best thing about this is that it doesn't only explains effects and new plots. It also goes in details of misdirection and psychic theorys. For example Tom explains stuff about the eye, and why you might run around everywhere, looking for your keys, while they've been infront of your eyes all the time. Very interesting indeed.
To sum it all up, I strongly recommend this DVD to anyone that likes strong close-up and parlour magic
It's available at www.pegani.dk and www.hocus-pucos.com, atleast that's where I've seen it. I bought it from Pegani's booth at FISM.
Here's the cover of the DVD:

Probably a camera trick or extreme video editing.

Overall, I liked the DVD - especially A Toast for Charon and Ambivalent Travellers. That being said, I wish that there was more of Tom's platform work.
There is a book of Tom's material coming out - probably before the end of the year.

Tom's Solitary Pass is not a camera trick I use it in real life performances! It's absolutely brilliant.

Get it just to see the linking fingerring routine using no stooges. Brilliant! Note that the rings are still borrowed from the audience...

I bought this DVD on a tip from my friend Doug Brewer for the Monty Walks Again routine. It is VERY strong and really easy to perform. This is a routine that I immediatly added to my reportoire.
I also agree that his linking finger rings routine is very deceptive and extremely well done.
The above two routines are my personal highlights of the DVD and are worth the price alone.

Someone told me that there were a nice review in the March issue of Linking Ring. Since I don't have that magazine, I'd be grateful if anyone could post a quote.

I picked up Tom's DVD on the recommendations which I found here and I really enjoyed it. His work on Brother John Hammon's "Your signed card" is terrific; streamlined, clear and doesn't lose any of the unexpected punch that exists in the original version. I can't decide if my favorite effect is that one or his coin effect (Monty walks again). Both are great. A definite thumbs up and thanks for the recommendation.
