Hey Hey Hey
I am offended when you mention the grammar challenged. The Sisters of St Joseph tried very hard for 12 years to educate me. I was appointed a grammar host here because Steve Brooks knows I am a work in progress. Al Angello

There was a whole thread about the Hindu shuffle right here:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=133 Some people are hypersensitive to "racial" issues, so much so that when they see someone who is Caucasian doing a Karate Coins routine and giving a Karate yell, they flinch because they think it is racist. BALONEY!!!! or more properly BOLGNA!!!! There are a huge number of practitioners of Karate and other martial arts that use the yell who have never been to Asia. But if you do the yell, you have to be prepared to have some way to back up your legitimacy of using it. Why? Because someone, somewhere is going to carp about it. So it may be best not to do this kind of thing unless you have the belt to back it up. Then you can kick their ... oh, never mind. Seriously, if you think the name of the Hindu shuffle is racist, then use it, but don't name it. I know that sensitivity training has become a big issue in some environments. Maybe some "desensitivity training" should also become a requirement. An English professor I know was once asked, "Why did Byron have his hero riding a white horse at this point?" He answered, "Sometimes a horse is a horse, not a symbol."

Magic is something that has nothing to do with "race" or even religion, in our case. If I watch someone perform an amazing illusion, I don't stop to see what color skin they have before I "allow" myself to be amazed.
As far as I'm concerned, the only issues that deal with skin color in regards to magic is the choice of skin color for a TT or other such utensil. But Josh is right--people will be people, and some people are racists. Hopefully less of them are magicians.

Who saw this funny clip on America's Got Talent a while ago where the caucasian magician climed into an oversized microwave and after 10 seconds "reappeared" as a man of color? Do you capitalize "caucasian"?

There has been a lot lot said here about racism and prejudice that raises the question of why is it there and how does it happen.
It's something that all races, religions, genders and cultures encounter at one time or another. It could be from personal experiences from a persons past or go back generations. Wars, local disputes, early abuses, the feeling that there are special preferences given to certain groups. It could be from the way the media has portrayed races, genders, type of workers, etc, etc. Are prejudices as subtle as see tattoos and piercings, dress styles, blondes, deaf mutes, dark skin vs light, etc? Sometimes these feelings of distrust, superiority, uncertainty and hatred run deep. There are social clubs for all different types of people. Many are exclusive to a certain type person and accepted while others of this type are criticized for doing so. Some folks are very outspoken in prejudices, others may have some hard feelings but be tolerant and then there are those who could care less and see others as a fellow human beings. Interesting viewpoints and great food for thought.
I don't know why this popped into my head but my mother has been an Sr.Lab Tech for one of the two leading blood suppliers in this country. The collection, testing, and hospital distribution of human blood to save lives. Hundreds and maybe more saved all over the country by those doing their "civic duty" to donate blood without compensation of any kind in order to save lives be it major surgery or emergency trauma. Collecting one pint at a time they're also instrumental in the handling and higher survival rate of accident or trauma victims rushed into the ER desperately needing blood or die. Funny how the ER is filled with such hard headed hardcore petty minds that quickly change their minds when they've been the victim of a very bad accident. In the Army we'd say during combat, there are no atheists in fox holes. By the same token, when **** hits the fan, your commrades are much much more than just some black, mexican, jewish, white guy. They are those that your life depends on. Hmmm..certainly becomes a place and time where there seems to be no time or room for such racism. She's heard of landmark cases where the blood was refused on religious grounds. They've been honored many times. Oddly enough, we don't often hear any hard core supremacist or racist refuse the life saving blood on grounds that a (insert derogatory racist label) might have donated the blood. Those who donate the tested and life saving blood come from all walks of life. For those truly serious about their racist positions, make sure to note the refusal to accept human blood on such grounds on a medical card in wallet or purse. They will honor your decision. Afterall, to go to such lengths, you must know what you are talking about and want out of this life huh...yes you do. |

Being an African-American mentalist and a retired Perisan Gulf I veteran, I returned to magic after a 17 year hiatus to develop self-esteem and motivational programs for inner city youths, to counter-act negative beliefs and behavior patterns caused primarily from living in an adversarial dominate culture. Moreover, my intent is to fuse mentalism and social commentary similar to film director Spike Lee does in his films.
Here’s two insightful documentaries from Kiri Davis and Karen Lum that illustrate my point. A Girl Like Me http://www.mediathatmattersfest.org/6/a_girl_like_me/ A Slip of the tongue http://www.mediathatmattersfest.org/6/slip_of_the_tongue/ Peace.

It's funny, I made a joke comment above, and Jonathan answered seriously. Successful racist leaders shape perceptions, and make their followers see something that isn't really there. By controlling the presented material, followers are misdirected to see a limited and altered view of life. While the reality of the situation (like a palmed coin) is made to seem unimportant. Take note racist leaders, read Fitzkee.

The word you're looking for is bigotry; Is there bigotry in magic? In this frame the answer is no.
For this is not a trait found in magic, but, in the individual. I have never witnessed this type of behavior, either, rewarded or encouraged by magicians. The original post referred to a story of disappointment when Rannie heard a man (magician) deride another in a disrespectful manner. Rannie gained by the experience, the man lost the respect of a fan.

There's some MINOR racism in magic's past where folks dressed up as Chinese magicians and comment was made about what was at the time almost an unknown culture.

I know there are overtly racist musicians who perform on the racist circuit ( I know of white, middle eastern and black performers who capitalize on this ). Are there any known magicians that use this in their acts?
BTW I use 9 Hippity Hop Rabbits, in order to be culturally diverse.

In films, Mexicans were cast to play tribal indians and Chinese were often played by caucasians. Warner Oland, a Swede, played Charlie Chan. Yul Brenner, a Russian, played the king of Siam ("we are Japanese, if you please") for years. For centuries, theaters in Greece, Japan, China and elsewhere would not allow women on the stage. But, that is attributed to social customs of the day and religious taboo. Those morons!
