Yes, in between robbing them of all their natural instincts and purpose for living, and in between teaching people that wild animals exist for our amusement to appear, vanish and treat as we like, I'm sure they are very well taken care of.

Dear josh,
these tigers are very well taken care of and I belive (not 100% sure) these tigers were born in captivity. Im as big as and animal lover as you It seams.. everytime the cirucs comes to town I protest, everytime the fair comes to town with the ponys I protest. Im an animal activist and an active member of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) I also know that greg doesn't have a single black mark on his record and takes very good care of his cats, birds and his family pet |

If that is animal cruelty then I am guilty of mistreating my dog for giving him a cookie for shaking a paw. This photo was not staged.. I have seen Greg do the same thing many times with NO cameras present. ( not only with the cats but his birds as well ) I think it pretty much describes what he thinks of his animals. http://www.timothydrake.ca/tigerk.jpg Best, Tim |

Hey ..... I got 2 cents so I shall spend it now.. firstly Tim has once again hit the nail on the head the training technique used is a food reward system, basically you find what the tiger loves and use that as a reward ( positive re-inforcement) no deprivation , no whips , no bull... actually this form of training is used in conjunction with hugs and kisses.. in my eyes I cant see any wrong there
Josh it is a sad sad state for tigers in the wild although we ( man) has been educated in the last 10 years we have managed to ruin another 40% of the tigers natural habitat.. that sickens me, I hope iam not alone here I see that Peta has also had a mention here , well I will say find the episode of Penn and Tellers "Bullsh*t" watch it and this may open your eyes here unfortunately for the children of the future there will be no wild tigers ( and many other wildlife forms ) my personal opinion is I would rather see them in a working enviroment with people like Greg who love and treat them as a family member uh oh I may have overspent... thanks for listening John |

Well, I certainly respect the well-thought out responses to my posts. I still maintain my views about wild animals being used in the entertainment industry. But I respecct that people can care about animals and have a different opinion. You have to admit that many MANY examples are out there of magicians who have animals for the sake of their show, and don't really care about them.
One point that you may want to consider, is what message is being sent by using animals in magic. In addition to my feelings about the stage being an inappropriate place for a wild animal, I worry that animals end up looking like props. Well, I mean they are used as props, let's be honest. I'd especially hate for any children to be in the audience of a magic show that makes tigers or elephants appear, or disappear, or teleport. How can we help people see that animals are not ours to use and toy with, when that's exactly what we do with them on stage? I look forward to the day when the only place we can see a wild animal, is in its own habitat. I'd much rather my child see a tiger on a nature show on TV, than ever get the impression that it's fun and entertaining to put it in a cage and make it vanish, or turn into a girl in a bikini. Regarding PETA, I find most of P&T's Bullsh*t to be just that. Mad rantings of people who have a strong and simplistic view of anything outside the mainstream. I enjoy some of their magic, but anyone with such strong agendas, and who want so badly for others to think the way they do make me nervous. I wouldn't really trust much of what they have to say about PETA, or recycling, or organic food or anything else. I love Teller's intro to Derren Brown's book, though. Just some thoughts. |

I can't remember the act but back during a 94 visit to vegas I was not happy with the looks of some of the cats being used. I rember a cougar that look malnourished and sickly but they still used it as part of the show. I gave up on trying to use doves because I couldn't get over the fear of harming them during my learning curve. As a huge animal lover many animal acts give me concern. I'ts only the fact that I have seen Greg and how he deals with his cats that I defend his work with the cats. I've called other magicians on their mistreatment in the past but lets not got there right now as the last such thread got pretty nasty and was deleted. Your concern for natures best is duely noted and appreciated. PETA.. well that's a whole other topic.. LOL. Best, Tim |

I grew up on several circuses during my early childhood and teenage years. Some thoughts on animals used in acts...While there will ALWAYS be bad performers who treat their animals like crap, the vast majority actually treat their animals like family pets - actually more like family members. They are extremely close to them and know them far better than a zookeeper overseeing several species in a zoo environment. They are loved and regarded as 'one of the family'.
I completely understand people's varied thoughts on animals being used in performances. And all have points to consider, but what I can't stand is that people think the issue discussed should be either BLACK OR WHITE. (eg. - PETA is GOOD, therefor ANIMAL ACTS are BAD. or the opposite: PETA is BAD, therefor ANIMAL ACTS are OKAY.) The sad truth is PETA uses some pretty bad tactics for getting headlines and getting their propaganda out there. The other sad truth is that the very FEW performers who abuse their animals in their acts wind up looking like the norm for all performers who use animals. Put it this way, magicians often get a bad rap, much like mimes or jugglers or clowns due to the crappy ones out there....Very often we hear, "I can't stand magic or magicians, but you were good!" The same goes for comedians when we hear, "I hate Comics, but you were so funny!" In some 'circus' circles the same is being said once people actually do some REAL investigating. "Wow, you really do treat your animals with respect and love, unlike what we hear on the news!" So when PETA shows a video of someone beating an elephant with a pipe, we naturally assume that ALL animals are treated in this manner in order to get them to perform. PETA may have good intentions (But that's another topic), but the way they go about it is crude & reckless. My years with circuses, arena shows, theme park shows, broadway shows and revues can tell you that the majority of acts using animals really do treat them with respect. (To be honest I've even seen them treated better than some assistants in certain magicians' acts.) Bad performers who harm or mistreat their animals should be rightly arrested and dealt with accordingly - just like regular people who mistreat their own pets and have the law come down on them. There are strict laws already in place which do not require PETA to run in to 'save the day.' On a completely different topic - It won't be what's right or wrong with performing animals that will decide whether or not they should be used -- It will simply be the public's whim of the moment. Pressure from poor ticket sales has prompted several shows to omit animals in their performances. Not to mention that insurance costs triple every year just to cover any accidents. Cirque has done so well not only because they put together outstanding shows, but also they completely avoided using animals at all. It's all in the marketing and what the public will allow -- wrong or right. I have three routines in my shows here in Tahoe which use animals - and they're all FAKED. Should anyone get concerned, they really can't because none of the animals are real. For myself I don't have to feed and take care of real animals while traveling and performing. I get through airports quite quickly and don't have to carry a briefcase of permits and documents around with me just for the animals. Quite nice actually! Unless PETFA is formed -- People for the Ethical Treatment of FAKE Animals. Then I'm screwed. : ) Best, Chipper : ) |
