I understand how the topit is useful for vanishes, but am more confused on its use for switches and transformations. I have Ammar's Topit DVD and enjoyed his deck switch, but feel that in most cases a silk would be impractical.
I have had a case of nerves many times while performing a false shuffle on a stack, such as BCS or Stebbins. I have had to give up attempting a false riffle shuffle and instead do a slip shuffle or no shuffle at all. I feel this problem could be eliminated by shuffling a deck, even handing it to another to shuffle, then switching out the deck. A topit could help in this regard, I would think, for the ditch, but for the effect I'm doing a silk would be out of place to switch in the new one. Any advice or discussion would be welcomed.

Check out carl cloutier's work on ringing in a stacked or gimmicked deck- you don't need a silk. The best switch I've seen.

Would that be on 3rd hand magic?

A switch of the deck for your purpose could be the best situation if all the shuffling is going to be done in the hands and not on the table. But, it's a lot of extra work and 'gaffing' to get to where you want to be. Just the fact that you 'have' to have a Topit adds a layer of set up.
If you can use a tabled shuffle take a look at any of the DVD's, etc. on the Zarrow Shuffle. I have used it for over 20 years with total success and it's not nearly as difficult to nail down as is any of the strip out shuffles. And, for a host of reasons. Best,

The Topit is a wonderful and useful utility device, it is not however the best course of action for what you want to accomplish. Mastering an in the hands complete false shuffle like Karl Hein's "Heinstein Shuffle" will eliminate any suspicion of a prearranged deck from your spectators minds.

Carl Cloutier's deck switch while very deceptive, requires the decks to be in their respective card cases. While I'm sure some guys out there may be able to pull it off without, it'll be troublesome to go thru Mr. Cloutier's handling without the boxes.
If you've had nerves doing false shuffles, I'm sure nerves would kick in too at the moment of Topiting.
