Hi Guys,
I'm noticing that magic can easily become something that consumes a lot of time, attention, and money! Researching tricks and approaches seems endless. I guess eventually you find a balance. Any other newcomers finding it overwhelming and potentially obsessive? -Ananda.

My main problem is that I spend too much time on magic forums as opposed to practicing. I've spent lots of money since I started 3 months ago. Early on I made too many impulsive buying choices, and so now I spend lots of time reading reviews before plopping down the dough.

When I started I explored the different types of magic, practiced a lot, spent bundles of money and went to conventions. Yes. I would say I was obsessed.
After a couple of years I felt burnt out and took a break for a couple of years. Life is a big place. Today I still practice and explore new ideas in my spare time, rarely buy anything and don't go to conventions. Due to current circumstances I don't perform much anymore but enjoy spending time at the Café attempting to help where I can. |

Yup !it's addictive alright!
I find myself practicing all the time now.cards when I am at home , coins wherever I go and recently I took up pen spinning while I am in class. whenever I go out with my friends like in a bar for example I do coin rolls and card flourishes while I do not perform. I realized that it annoys some of my friends and even me after a while but I can't stop it. a good thing is I guess that I do not spend vey much money. and I perform more than I used to. AND I practice wherever I am which is good up to a point. well , I can't complain because in the end , it pays off -Matt

It can be addicting and yes, it can be expensive. But I enjoy this forum, you can learn a lot about a certain effect before actually buying it. I'm sure we have all been disappointed with a purchase we've made. What's nice about this forum is the "for sale" section.
If you don't like an effect you have purchased or if you nolonger use an effect, you can always sell it rather than let it collect dust. I probably spend an hour a day on this forum, but definetly do not practice an hour a day. |

Magic requires your attention, time, resources and TLC. But magic is extremely rewarding and fun for me, and I just wish that I've more time to do all I want and learn all I want. Reading the threads here at the Café actually relaxes me and I really can't go without it for more than 2 days.
My goal is to practice more and purchase more wisely this year.

You have to set goals or you will never get anything done. If I don't set goals I tend to seek out more and more magic without ever getting anything accomplished.

I first got into magic at age 12. As a teen I was in and out of it...now, at age 40 I'm diving back into it again--it is indeed an addiction, but at least it's a healthy one!!

I left at 12 and got back in my mid 30s. You'll find that if you do it right, you'll spend less money on a lot of stuff, but a lot of money on a few key pieces and books. As for time, if you're not spending countless hours, you're doing something wrong.

At this point, I'm in the research stage. I'm trying to gather information so that I can find things that fit what I want to do and so that I don't make a lot of bad choices regarding purchases, etc. I really appreciate the existence of this forum and the time that everyone puts in here.
Many thanks! -Ananda.

I have had my many years where magic was completely absent, but unlike other interests it eventually has a way of reappearing back in my life. It's been cyclical, but I wouldn't be surprised the current interest will be there for a very long time.

Same with me GeorgeG. I had gone years without magic in my life, and a young friend got me interested again. Now I'm teaching her the basics and I'm diving back in, learning stagecraft and illusions. It's a great time to be getting back into magic...lots of new technology making new illusions possible, and still plenty of sleight of hand tricks to learn.

There is no doubt...I am totally obsessed. I dumped a nice bundle on this stuff,
I didn't miss any lecture withing a 50 mile radius, I'm on the forums 24 hours day to the point where my main finance of magic was getting ****ed. I'm not burned out yet as keep finding stuff that just makes me dig in. Between my practice, forums, IBM meetings, lectures, and just magic...I ...i ...i i...ahhhhhhhhhhhh I am now starting to balance it out, until I go pro, trying to focus my attention on what I need to clean up first, but I have to grow up and come back to reality to pay the bills every now and then

Its addictive alright... once you see the people react, you get hooked. Its just feels nice to mistify someone or put a smile on some faces.

Magic is addictive - and can be expensive - but what a wonderful addiction compared to drugs, drinking, gambling etc etc - bringing joy into peoples lives - a little magic in their day - instead of pain. We need to cultivate more addicts...
