I would like to get into doing shows for kids. I lovwe working with kids and they almost always get along great with me. My only problem is that I can't do Birthday parties, christmas shows, or church shows. I know, it really narrows the field doesn't it?...
So my question is: What are you ever hired for besides the "normal" shows?

Try company picnics, family reunions, wedding receptions, Cub Scouts blue and gold banquets, non-profit organizations, business grand openings, libraries, city summertime programs, recreation centers, day care centers and strolling in resturants. Believe me, there are more out there. You can put yourself in the Yellow Pages, but you might get more calls for the ones you mentioned. Go to them and promote yourself. That is what I do, and it works.
P.S. What tricks do you do? Good luck Dynamike |

Hold on a minute here! WHY can't you do Birthday Shows. I am sure we are all intrigued to know.

I'm one of Jehovah's Witnesses. We don't celebrate Birthday's, Christmas, or any secular holidays. In turn, I can't do shows for them. I don't want to sound like a "Bible thumper" preacher here so if you are really interesting in the REASONS behind that feel free to PM me.
EDIT: Thanks everyone for your help. I particularly like doing close-up magic but I'm willing to learn and buy effects for stage. I knew there were other things you guys were hired for I just didn't have any experince with them so I didn't know. Thanks again.

This thoroughly explains why. Yes, Christ's birth of course is not recognised as being in December is it? Nor do you celebrate birthdays. I would personally aim at Fetes, Fairs, Shopping Malls, or restaurants that are family orientated. Be happy in what you do.

Peedlkyle,
I had a feeling something like that was the reason. But over here people of your religion are not at all interested in watching magic tricks. That is the part that confuses me. Dynamike |

I would offer my services to hospitals (especially the childrens ward)and hospices if I had to perform under such restrictions. Retirement homes too are always looking for various entertainers. I have also heard that there is a good market to be found in day cares as well.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I am going to look into getting some bigger scale tricks that can be done on stage. I'll try out the libraries and hospitals especially. I think I'd be comfortable there.
Dynamike, where are you exactly? I did some research because I read a post back by Flourishdude where he asked me what my parents thought. I checked it out and the "official" view on magic of my religion is that sleight of hand type magic does no harm, just be careful who you show it to. I don't show magic to children who's parents don't want me to of course but for those who appreciate it, it's ok.

Hi Peedlkyle,
If your want to do magic for kids for a living, it will be difficult because birthday parties are the biggest bulk of income. If I couldn't do B/Day parties I would have to get another job as I wouldn't earn enough money. Do you do shows for adults at the moment Peedlkyle? All the Best, Billy |

I am only 14. I don't think I want to/would be comfortable doing adult shows. I know BDays are the main thing, it kind of disappoints me but that's the way it goes.
