BAD THINGS!
This Christmas weekend in Sweden a big TV channel showed a program in prime time called "Street Magic Revealed" made by FOX TV, 1999. This was a horrible experience, they explained many great effects. How can American magicians allow this kind of exposure? Some of the effects revealed: Arm Twisting Illusion (I will never do this effect again). Cigarette through coin (I will never do this effect again). Nail writer gimmick (I will never do this effect again). Floating Body effect. 3 Card Monte Effect (I will never do this effect again). Plus many more great effects... This TV program was one hour too long! What's the point with this kind of exposure? Money? What can we do against this kind of program? _________________ Mats G. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Please tell me it's only a bad joke... After revealing all the illusions, they start now revealing close-up tricks? What's next? Stage? Mental? Why don't they reveal all the secrets about Christmas on a TV Special??? "Sorry Kids... Santa Claus is not real.. His beard is a fake..." 20 minutes ago there was a special on TV in Switzerland. I didn't care about it, because I thought it's one of those repeated specials on Christmas each year with the Masked Magician (Valentino), but no, it wasn't. It was another guy. He explained things like: - Broom Suspension - Walking through a mirror - Vanishing a truck (with a circle of spectators around it) Well in Switzerland everything happens more slowly... so maybe somebody can "reveal" now which further "revealing" specials I have to expect in the future??? Not to worry guys. We here in the States went through this whole thing years ago. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth. Those who didn't know better were up in arms and looking for blood and threatening lawsuits. But when the fog juice lifted everything went back to normal.
You can do your Cig thru quarter, your arm twist and whatever else was exposed in a couple of months, if not immediately because the percentage of people who saw the show is small and the people who retain the knowledge even smaller. Effects like the cups and balls and linking rings have been exposed for centuries and magicians continue to fool, and even more important, entertain with them. Magic is alive and well in the States, masked magician or no.

The strange thing about that show was they put in some bogus explanations for some of the effects, like last minute magician's guilt perhaps? The cig thru quarter had a huge hinge mechanism on the back as I recall, the think of a card you see showed some completely unnecessary short card gimmick, and there were others.
Joe public soon forgets about it anyway, apart from the Balducci which is fairly common knowledge (relatively speaking) amongst college student types now unfortunately (in the U.K. anyway). The show was discussed ad nauseum on the newsgroups when it aired in the U.S. |

For once I agree with Payne. (Mark this day on your calendar, big guy!) The general public will forget about it within a few months. There is no way they can retain the knowledge of every single trick exposed on the show, unless they tape it and watch it 400 times over. Most people here in the U.S. just flip past them whenever they come on now. Truth is, most people like being amazed by the effects and are disappointed once they learn the method. But I wouldn't tune in to watch any of the shows, either. The last thing those shows need is better ratings.
If anyone sees my sanity, please return it to

The exposure of the Balducci levitation was especially unfortunate. For decades, it was an obscure, little-known secret.
The good performers will still be able to use the exposed technologies after a few months cooling off period.

The exposure of the Balducci levitation doesn't bother me at all because it's been taught for years on TV to children on shows like The Sherry Lewis Show.
The fact of the matter is that people love to show magicians tricks they know (four burglars card trick, etc.) which in turn makes magic all the more popular. My teacher came to school so excited the day after the special, and I've been getting good grades since! Justin |

Singapore is going to air a repeat of the Masked Magician soon. Heard that someone wrote in and told the TV station to help magicians by not airing this show and they agreed! Lucky us.

I wouldn't tune in to watch the shows. Watching them only improves ratings, which in turn can spark more exposure shows. And by the sound of it that's the last thing a country like Malaysia needs. So don't watch them.

Actually if your not a Nielson member, you have no effect on the ratings whatsoever.
But why watch anyway? Personally, I watched about 20 minutes of it and was so bored I turned it off and I can't imagine a normal person watching that whole show. Also I performed two effects from the show after my friend said he had watched it and he had no idea how they were done. It's just too bad for the laypeople, they are the ones that get the worst end of the deal when they feel the big "oh that's it". Magic secrets are usually boring and dirty and that's the main reason they shouldn't be revealed. Matt |

That "Street Magic Revealed" show has aired several times. I personally do not exclude effects because of exposure; it does make it more difficult to be entertaining but we will survive. Incidentally, does anyone know the identity of that masked guy on the show?

I'd be interested to know his identity also. There was such a fervor around the MM and this clown seems to have escaped the wrath. He's affected a lot more magicians with his close up exposures than the MM did with his illusion exposures.

It was also aired in Belgium a couple of months ago. I agree with debaser, it was pretty boring. (A lot of "blah-blah" in that typical movie-trailer-voice.)
It wasn't really the exposure of the secrets that annoyed me the most, it was more the tone of voice in which it was done. (If you've seen it, you know what I mean...) |

I know this seems kind of harsh but it only makes it worse when these topics pop up...

I think its we the magicians that make the most noise like someone said. Lets at least pretend not to bother even if we do.

You know, the people who are saying "The audience will forget it in a few months, they like to be amazed" may sound like a bunch of Pollyannas at first, but they may have a point . . . people can have selective memories, to the extreme.
A few weeks ago, I did a trick where I vanished a little bouncy ball and then snorted it out my nose for a friend of mine . . . just a spur-of-the moment impulse, but she was highly impressed and begged me to do it again for a friend of hers . . . so I gave in, and unforunately she saw the move . .. Then just a few days ago I did the same trick for her and a group of her friends, but with a coin . . . she remembered me doing the trick for her before, but she seemed to have totally forgotten my failed "repeat performance" - and she was totally amazed. Funny how people crave amazement - of the good kind. |

Man, I get fooled by GREAT TT magic. It's upsetting when you see it on TV, but it will pass. They won't remember.

If the public's memory were that good, we would not have to repeat the ads day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, etc.
The concept is slow learning and fast forgetting. Buy another What? Bob |
