What's the name of the effect where you write down the name of a card, have a spectator think of a card. You then ask the spectator for the name of the card, you open up your note and it says "Bob". You explain that you name all of your cards. You find the spectator's card and turn it over to show that the name written on the card is "Bob". You fan the deck and reveal that all of the cards have different names on them. You spin the chosen card in the air, show both sides, etc.
I did a search of "name card" and came up with lots of posts that weren't this effect. Thanks.

Max Maven posted the following on GeMiNi several years ago:
Quote: The original gag belongs to Alexander Woolcott (critic/essayist) who was at a party (probably in the 1930s; do not have that information at hand) where magic was being performed by John Mulholland. Mulholland displayed several coins, and asked Woolcott to name one. He pointed to one, and said, "I name it Elmer." (I am not certain that this is the actual name used, but you get the idea.)

Thanks folks. The history is interesting.
I'll pick one up. This is an example of a really simple effect that plays big and as long as you don't do it a lot, people are really are baffled by it.

This is one of those tricks that I scoffed at until I found myself in a position where I had to perform it (my boss at the magic shop told me to do it for the customers or I was fired). We sold the "Phil" version, and I would occassionally break it out on a customer. I was floored by the great reaction it got. It's a little funny, a little cute and even a little like the ending in an ID routine.
Thanks for that background on it, John! |

Also a version out there called "Fred". Does not have other names on it though, only the name Fred on the spectators free selection..
The Phil deck is great, very unique principle. Rennie
The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......

Wow, the Phil deck does look really good...I hadn't come across this before.
It'll suit very well for a comedy presentation, I'll pick one up. Cheers Nick |
