Go to your local hardware store and get a piece of pvc tubing about 2 feet and buy two caps to fit the ends. Cut it to fit your needle and slot one end so that your ribbon can hang out of the tube. Fill one end with about 2 inches of Vaseoline and you're ready to perform anytime. Your needle will not rust.

Whenever the point pops the balloon I use the other end. It works just as well. It's not the needle, it's the balloons. They need to be fresh. They need to be blown up to the brink and then let out 1/4 to 1/3 of the air.
Look at this demo clip. It shows some unusual penetrations. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzpbh0xOOxQ

Is a card or silk to an un-popped balloon taught anywhere else?

The silk in balloon is a standard old classic. The routine I use vanishes the silk simultaneously to the appearance. Its a lecture piece I included as an extra on the DVD. The bill in balloon is not around to my knowledge.

Book a Magic Ian Lecture and you will have "ideas through your skull" effects.
He had to repeat the "silk into balloon" effect four times -- even after revealing method! It just looks like magic! I never considered any "through the ballon" effects until seeing him perform. These are not "balloon tricks" -- just magic effects using balloons. A sharp needle seems like a prop -- a coat hanger or pen is not.

It was during that time that I developed some of the eccentric ways to use the effect. As a shop owner and demonstrator, many performers used to come back and complain that the needle was busting the balloons. I used to take their needles and put the other end through. It was all about the balloon. I put the DVD out with the shop techniques and lecture stuff in it.

I have one of the storage wands for my needle, but the wand has been sitting in the wand for a couple years since it's last use. I feel like I need to refill the wand with lubricant. I see people above talking about using vaseoline, but what is the best way to fill the wand up?

Just fill in the dug out again. Maybe even review your instructions again. The wand is not intended to self-lubricating the full length of needle, you still have to smooth out the Vaseline along the length of the needle, so take some paper towels with you to wipe your fingers off. In other words, the wand is not filled with lubricant. I do know there has been a number of different people making them, so your may be different, I only seen Ickle Pickle's model, so yours may be different, I don't know because you did not mention your model. Also, being you have not used it in some time, take a minute and inspect the point, make sure the very tip is not bent and is perfectly pointed. I have had to take a sharping stone and re-sharpen the tip. I believe this is mentioned in the instructions as well, as with use, it will become dull. Strange I know, but mine became dull over time and use. |

I've used this in the school show for years. I don't have the time to lube the needle before the show (4 shows a day, sometimes)
See friend Bowers post above. Pvc pipe, just large enough to hold the needle will work fine. I have used for umpteen years, a section of the hollow plastic rod, used to adjust Venetian Blinds. I don't cork the ends. I plug the needle point end with a tiny wad of cotton ball, saturated with vaseline, to protect the point. The rod is long enough for all but 3/4" of the eye end to protrude. I use a bright colored, not too thick, yarn, about 30" in length. About once a month, on the road (about 50+ shows)I squeeze about an "inch" of vaseline from a tube of vaseline into the open end of the tube. (Jars are too bulky to carry.) This lubricates the entire needle when it's inserted for storage. Handled properly, the needle should last until you do your "last show"! Otherwise read the above thread for tips on sharpening, etc. I've always used FRESH "helium quality" 9" balloons from WalMart's party supply aisle. (On the road, there's "always" a WalMart!) I prefer yellow for visibility. I never buy a season's supply! Once a month, I buy enough for a month's shows. (Ozone affects the rubber. --I learned THAT when I did balloon animals, back in the 50s/60s. Keep the balloons stored in a sealed plastic bag. I always insert the needle in the "end" opposite the nozzle--at the thick point!--and, I bring it out of the balloon at the nozzle end--again, at the thick point. >>>>>>>>>>NEVER USE WATER SOLUBLE LUBRICANTS!!!<<<<<<<<<<<<<< I wrote up my very simple routine/presentation in my book. The line when I display the needle, is: "I bought this for my part time job! --I sew on buttons for the JOLLY GREEN GIANT!
