Hi folks,
I wonder if you can share some experience using PayPal. I heard a lot of stories about hijacked accounts, the risks and so on. Apologies, if this is the wrong forum for the question . . . Thanks a lot Andy

For me, they've always been great. The one time I contacted them asking for a personal info change they responded and did what I needed right away.
I have no complaints. I use it every day.

Hello,

Jaxon has had a less than stellar experience with them as a retailer. They seem to operate based on volume and, apparently, will err on the side of the consumer.
For me (consumer), I got phished, at least I think I did. I never received a confirmation from them although I asked, repeatedly. I closed down all my accounts and haven't been back since. Already been a victim of ID theft, don't want to risk another. As a retailer, if you are prepared to take the occasional loss and abosorb it through volume you could not achieve otherwise, it would be a viable option. As a consumer, I have no confidence in them. |

It is not paypal that err's on the customer's side, it is the bank - all banks side with their customer period, end of story, there is no stopping it ... paypal cant do it, your local magic store cant do it, bill gates cant even do it. If the buyer calls their bank and issues a chargeback, both you and paypal get stiffed.
All credit cards come with the protection ... if you call your bank, and tell them you didn't make a charge they will chargeback - often, no questions asked. It doesn't matter if you bought the item with paypal or at the local mall. It has been that way from the very beginning of the credit card. Well ok, in the very beginning they didn't do that ... and nobody used credit cards. So they offered chargeback protection for consumers, and now everybody uses credit cards. But the interesting thing about paypal is that most of their transactions do not go through credit card, they go through the bank. Which means as a consumer, you don't generally have the same protection. As a seller, you have more protection with paypal than with a credit card ... but only if paypal opt's to protect you, which in most cases they will take the high road with the bank. -JoeJoe

I hadn't used it in a while and recently tried to pay a fellow member here for his product and the darn thing wouldn't work. On top of that, I emailed paypal repeatedly and it took several days before anyone got back to me. And...after all that, they weren't able to fix it or tell me why the transaction hadn't worked. So I'm going to cancel my account.

Here's my input on this.
If you open an account with them. Put some money in it and use that money to purchase things on line. Then I doubt you'll have any trouble. I wouldn't suggest holding a large amount of money in that account though. Not because of any personal experience but fir the simple matter that they could (if they wanted or had a reason to) prevent you from being able to spend that money. In other words they could under some circumstances "Freeze" your account. When that happens the money will still be there but you won't be able to touch or spend it until that issue is resolved. But in my 5 years of using their services I've never had that happed. On the other hand if you are using their services to sell things. Be aware of some flaws they have. To be honest I don't think it's really their system that is the problem. It the people out there who take advantage of it. Here's how I'd break it down: A customer (A person who purchases something on line with the money they have in their paypal account or credit card) are safe. If you purchase something from someone as using paypal and that person doesn't deliver or the product isn't satisfactory. The customer can make a "Buyers Complaint" at paypal. Paypal will then freeze that money in the sellers account until the issue is resolved. In other words the seller won't be able to touch the money from that purchase until the complaint is worked out (Item shipped, replaced, fixed or refunded). That doesn't sound bad does it. Well, to an honest buyer it isn't a bad thing. But what if the issue wasn't the sellers fault? What if the buyer is lying? That's exactly what happened to me. Someone purchased almost all my E-books in one day. All the items where delivered and received. Then two days later the guy made a buyers complaint for every single sale. That money was then frozen in my account until it was resolved. I contacted the buyer and tried to work it out. While I contacted Paypal a number of times I never got one single reply from them. Yet the guy (Who made the buyer complaints) informed me that paypal had already told him they where returning his money to him. And they eventually did. So the bottom line is it's a good system if you are purchasing things. Not so good if you are selling things. Because there are people out there who can and will take advantage of them always taking the buyers side. Ron Jaxon |

Ron,
I discoved your mail thread - a very bad story indeed. Did you switch to another provider? You mentioned that you can limit the money on the account. Does that mean that you can only spend the money you virtually deposit in paypal? Does this prevent overspending - an important security point to prevent someone to hijack your account and misuse it? Thanks a lot for the sharing Andy

Unfortunately the world isn't set up for deaf people. At least the business world isn't. I tired to call them with my TTY but no help there. I would have asked someone else to call for me but no one in my family or friends understand about paypal or selling on line.

For buying paypal is ok. I had my bank account listed with them until the phish incident. Now that they will accept credit cards without having an account with them, I don't think I will go back.

Paypal was much worse when they first started. They were using convicts to do the transactions. This is a lot like using child molesters for babysitters. After eBay purchased them, all of that changed.
I had real problems with them under their old system. Under the new one, I've had excellent results. But they aren't without flaws. I recommend getting a completely separate bank account for this. Go to a bank you have never dealt with before and open up a checking account. Do your paypal work with that account. If they decide to freeze your account, you will be out a lot less than someone who uses his personal account.

A lot of catalog companies did that when the internet was fairly new. They didn't stop to think that using convicts was really dumb.

I wouldn't be so sure that Paypal are quick to freeze sellers accounts - I complained about a Bob Cassidy purchase I made and had my comlpaint upheld, however I was told that the vendor did not have sufficient funds in his account to refund my money but that they would continue to try.
They didn't try very hard because he's still selling and numerous emails to paypal asking why they don't do something ended in sheer frustration at the level of stupidity of some of their staff. End result, no refund and Bob is still trading and breaking promises. |
