I have recently refound my interest in the lie detector plot and came across ron bauers version of the lie detector.
in the past I have prefered not to have to look thru the deck once the card has been returned to the deck as a way to program the deck in other words set the effect up. however the set up doesn't take long and I think the pay off is worth it. you ask 3 questions and spell out the answers 3 times making 3 packets of cards, you turn over each packet and the face card of the packet tells you the true answer to the question, place the last pile on to the middle pile and now the first pile gives you the correct value of the chosen card with the second pile giving you the correct suit, then you are able to turn over the top card of the remaining deck to actually locate and show the chosen card. you get all this and yet the method is real easy requiring minimal skill so you can put your effort in to the presentation. I don't think you are going to get much better than this but if anyone knows of any other good versions I would love to hear them |

There is a very good version in the book 'Solmons Mind' by Eugene Burger. There is no set up and you do not have to look through the deck after the card is returned.

Al Smith's (of Rotherham England) version called 'Swindlies' from his excellent book Card Tricks Now & Then.
There is no forcing, memory work, multiple outs, pre-arrangement.....it's without doubt the cleanest version I have ever read AND I use it regularly. If anyone is interested PM me.

Markymark I think I either know the version you mention or a similar one and if its the one I'm thinking of I don't think you get the revalations you get with brauer's method ie the correct answer to each question,i could be wrong but I think you just get the revelation of the correct card at the end.

It is based on the nine card problem of Jim Steinmeyer. The spelling of true, false or both always ends on the correct card so yes,the revelations are different.

I don't know if this counts as having a lie detector plot, but Darwin Ortiz has an amazing routine called Liar's Poker. It's very impressive.

Max Maven has a great "lie detector" plot with his "Ancient Art of Chinese Pulse Reading". I believe you find it in his lecture notes from a couple of years ago. Great story/plot and audience involvement.

Here is the mini-history of 'Lie Speller'.
Before the advent of 'Lie Speller', there was 'Truth Speller' in which the selection appears after the cards are dealt according to true Color, Suit and Odd/Even. It was Herbert Milton's trick (title forgotten) in April 1922 issue of "Magic Circular". The first 'Lie Speller' is Martin Gardner's 'Card Speller' in "Here's New Magic" published in 1937. In this trick, spectator may tell lie or truth for 3 questions. Gardner published his variation 'Improved Lie Speller' in "12 Tricks with a Borrowed Deck" published in 1940. Other 'Lie Speller' versions. Jack Avis 'To Lie or Tell the Truth' in May 1968 isuue of "Pallbearere's Review". Bruce Cervon : 'Perfect Speller' in December 1968 issue of "Pallbearer's Review". Nick Trost : 'The Lie Detector' in April 1969 issue of "New Tops". Nick Trost : 'Automatic Lie Speller' in August/September issue of New Tops. Joe Berg : 'Auto-Spell-It-Deck' in "The Berg Book" (1983). This is a 'Truth Speller'. Robin Robertson : 'The Perfect Spel-liar' in "Card Modes" (1983). Jerry Hartman : 'To Spell the Truth' in Cardcraft (1991). Allan Sleight : 'I can not Spell a Lie' in "Semi-Automatic Tricks' (1993). J.C. Wagner : 'Simplex Lie Speller' in "The Commercial Magic of J.C.Wagner" (1987). Hideo Kato |

Don't think I've ever read a lie-detector routine, though when I first heard the idea so many workings came to mind. Really is a great premise.

Terry LaGerould has one in "Pasteboard Presentations 2" called Cardboard Lie Detector that uses 9 cards. I use it all the time!

A few others I like, by Harry Lorayne, that I'd add to the list:
Voice Print (from Best of Friends) -- Harry offers some credit for the original idea to Bob Neale. It's Not Easy To Lie (from Personal Collection) That's The Truth (also from Personal Collection) |

Ron Bauer's Lie Detector in LINT!
I can also vouch for the Trost one, "Automatic Lie Speller" in the book "The Card Magic of Nick Trost" - I think Marlo liked this one... Justin |

Hi juble, that is the version that I descibed at the beginning of the thread but forgot to mention that I read it in lint although I did credit ron bauer.
I have already looked up jc wagner's simplex lie speller and also found the next effect in the book to be yet another version called would I lie to you, however I would still say that although good are not quite up to the standard of the ron bauer version. |

Hi Guys, Check out my Packet Lie Detector in "Full Metal Jacket" It has all the conditions you spoke of: cards showing when you spell value-color and suite of there selected card. For the finish, you spell to there card or they can name any card other than there's and you spell it and turn over last card and it's there selected card to finish. I've had a lot of fun with this at my bar here in Coronado. Check it out and I think you'll agree.
Best, J.C.

I believe that Ron Bauer's "Lie Detector" is, without a doubt, THE BEST version out there. But the name is a bit misleading. I have seen RB do "Lie Detector" and he doesn't say anything about the deck being a computer, or programming it like one, or about a deck of cards being able to "detect lies." RB's presentation is PLAUSIBLE... and FUNNY. He called the trick "Lie Detector" as a nod to Martin Gardner and his "Improved Lie Speller."
And not only does RB's trick have a great presentation, it's EASY TO DO. It uses any shuffled deck and is completely impossible to reconstruct. Also, it's FAST. By the way, Ron Bauer is the one who came up with the idea of having each of the dealt packets reveal the selection. Now his idea is used in many "Lie Detector" tricks. Only Nick Trost has given credit. |
