I have been thinking about this illusion all day, are we sure Dan has no plans to market it?
Again, Ryan great job with your performance, love the silk moves. Lance |

Jamie and Lance,
Thanks again for your kind words. I am thrilled you enjoyed the performance. When we started to choreograph the illusion we wanted a clearly defined metaphor, which of course is the significance of the silk. People can relate to metaphors -it gave the silk meaning and importance. Thanks Again! Best, Ryan

I saw it like you said in your video, its a great idea......... it beats putting a silk in her hand because you have a spare silk back stage and you are a magician! If you know what I mean.... JA |

Its a nice deceptive illusion which utlises the most applicable method to make the prop as small as possible. Daniel Summers is a very good designer of illusions. I really like this.
The comments about slow sword insertions always surprise me. I believe that this is how it should look if you are supposed to be driving them somehow through your assistant. I always think far too many performers get hooked into the snappy spike shoving because its a showy thing...but to me it looks far too easy and telegraphs the girl is nowhere near them. I would be interested in everyones thoughts on this. Ryan your performance is a very solid one that 'gets on with the illusion' I liked it alot. Congratulations. The final angular pose of you both together works lovely with the lighting as well, excellent stuff

I'll let you all in on a little secret.
Ryan received this prop only 3 days before he had to leave on his spring tour. His usual rehearsal space was unavailable so he rented an empty warehouse and set up his lighting rig to choreograph the movements of the routine as well as program the lighting. The paint was still wet on his new JAM illusion and he'd been working out the timing on INSTANT BABE so one night was all he had to spend on FOUL PLAY. He had told me he " had a routine" all worked out in his head so I was most interested to stand back and watch him work it out with the prop for the first time. Kudos must be given to his lighting crew and assistant Kendra ( a professional choreographer ) and I was quite impressed how professionally they brought it all together as a team so quickly. ( a few hrs at most ) You'd never know this when you see the video. Congrats Ryan! Best, Tim |

Nice stuff! Ryan's show has really evolved since I last saw it when I was living out in Parksville BC. You can tell this guy is constantly working hard to take his work to the next level.
Who built the prop?

Good performance of the illusion. Would love to get to see Ryan perform live sometime. Ever East of Toronto Ryan?????
About this illusion, Steinmeyer seems to handle the methodology with greater finesse than Dan. "Cutting Edge" seemed to do a good job with the principle, but "Death Drop", and now this one has me concerned. I find a lot of illusions look lop sided, and therefore may transmit to the audience's subconcious, the method. (Maybe not the exact placement of the girl). Like Blackstone Sr. felt if the "Doll's House" was too small to hold the girl produced, then the audience wonders where did she come from. It starts the audience a-thinking. I would be very careful on photos used in publicity of this illusion also. Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

I think the logic behind Daniel's illusions and load placement is fantastic.. and most inovative. The methodology and placement in his designs have never been used before and look extremely deceptive. I am considering getting Foul Play.

Hey HowardT,
The load placement, or how he conceals the load placement? The first is not new, the latter, read the Wakeling book, or check out some early J. Gaughan illusion details. The design is a great combination of many ideas that have gone before. But I always had a problem with Spikers that had the box at one end of a large table, versus the way A.W. originally designed his ie. spikes from both sides. Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

You are right on Blair.. it IS great design.. As per your post ...you will NOT find the "latter" in any wakeling book I'm afraid..unless you are refering to the box on the table and that is a minor detail.. Sadley, You may be, IMO missing the most wonderful part of this prop... as most people knowlegable in Illusion might. I can't go into detail here in public.. but unless you've seen this up close, in person, it is hard to know all the details that Summers has included.. and trust me... It has not been done before like this.
I agree with you in regards to having the box at one end of the table... As you..I prefer the original spiker A.W. designed for Mark.. John G. did a FANTISTIC job on the table it is THIN. But if an act doesn't have a traditional stage to perform on all the time... Foul Play fits the bill. I once watched the AW spiker on a small stage and it lookied like a condo... IMO should NOT have been performed on that stage.. but that was up to the performer!! I see Foul Play.. like the Origami... It is small and compact.. and so deceptive. But again.. it's just my opinion. I think it's great. Blair.. where can we come and see you show??.. Looks great! |

Hey there HowardT,
When I referred to the Wakeling book, It was not for the actual method or design, but the combination of "thoughts" for want of a better word. Black art, masking of depths, ""vanishing" load spaces etc.etc. Not sure if there enough other "details" in this piece to move it, at least in my mind, to the realm of new and different (with regards to basic method, or basic design) The combination of all these little things is very well executed however, so not sure whether the details you are suggesting relate to method or design. I do indeed like the idea of a smaller foot print, but I still find that when this rather large box is open to show the inside that it looks a little lopsided, that is why I indicated that I would be cautious on how I photograped it. There are many "plunger" type illusions out there, so to me the only "touch" is on how he has masked the combined thickness of the "plunger" (spike rack) with the main illusion. And as you know Dan has used this in his previously released illusions. (But not being in the know, I do not know if this was an earlier idea compared to those releases) I do like to discuss this sort of thing, keeps the juices flowing, so without wanting the get more specific in this "public" area, you can always p.m. me to chat. Good grief, my site isn't pretty, but it served its purpose, almost 8 years old, it laid the foundation for the passing of the show's name "ShaZzam!" to me,, which I purchased with the show, and the legitimate rights to use it, and claim it as mine. Take care, fun chatting, talk again. Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"
