Does anyone have Michael Close's Unbelievably Useful Comedy prop from his website http://www.forworkersonly.com? I found the hand at the local Dollar General store and was wondering if his ideas are worth getting for it. Thanks.

If you use comedy in your performance, then I think it may be useful to have this prop. I personally don't use it. I have seen Mike Close uses it in his shows in tune with Paul Harris' philosophy of magic, i.e., to pull audiences out of the state of astonishment in order to get applause. If the price is right, I say go for it!

MagicBrent,
I got the prop as well off of a key chain at a local convenient store several, several years ago. Michael uses the prop in Butte Ox? Two Butte Ox! which is a cards across from underneath the participant as the individual sits on the cards. I think it adds to the effect in a funny way and yet allows the magician to remove a card from underneath the person without being rude or invading of their personal space. Basically, it allows you to remove a card from underneath a participant (particularly a female) without being slapped. Hope this helps in your decision........ |

Get it. Think of it as a funny magic wand. It can be the perfect reason to go to pocket to get/ditch something. It is a useful utility prop. Use your imagination. think of the other hand gestures that could be used, from the innocent to the obscene. It could be a "very useful comedy prop".

I think the main point of getting it from Mike are the tips and advice he gives with it. It serves many a purpose other than just a quick site gag. (Although I agree about the various gestures. I carry 2, one with the OK sign and one with the one finger salute)
The greatest use for this is the ability to ditch dirty items in your hand. But part of that comes from setting the stage of it as a running gag. When people become conditioned to it, they never stop and think that you may have ditched something while pulling it out. It also is a perfect item for strolling situations. For those times where a magic wand is not conducive for wearing a suit and strolling in a cocktail setting, this is something funny to pull out of your pocket. It also makes people feel more comfortable applauding in small groups because of the cue it gives you. If you can buy it from Mike with tips, it is worth it. I assume he condensed all his ideas into instructions with the gimmick. I have the advantage of learning different parts of it over the course of his Workers series. He introduces it in Volume 1, writes more in Volumes 3, 4 and 5. But....if you can buy the gimmick at a local store and have the money to spend, it is well worth the money and effort to buy his condensed Workers series Ebook. Then you get all the tips, as well as effects to use it with. |
