Hi,
I am building a vertical shadow box. I plan on using fabric sides rather than paper. What kind of fabric should I use? I want to make sure that responds well to shadows yet is opaque enough when the light is off. The fabric DC uses for his portal vanish would work out really well. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan |

There are already a few threads on this that you can search for if you'd like more details, but it seems that the general consensus is to use white spandex. However, someone also mentioned using white plastic tablecloths. This is what I have been using, and I have to say that it works out much better than I had ever imagined. These table cloths are very cheap, the shadows are cast fairly well, and they are completely opaque (at least all of the ones that I have used are opaque)
There is only one problem that I have come across. All the ones that I have bought have come folded up, which means that you have to deal with the creases. I have been trying to find some on rolls, but so far have not had any luck finding a roll that is wide enough to fit my shadow box. So far what I have done is I have hung them with a weight in the bottom for a couple of days, and then pulled them tight over the shadow box. It works ok, but I think it would look better if you could find these table cloths on a roll. |

Having a box that is opaque when you want, and shows shadow when you want, will require attention to the stage lighting. Avoid bright lighting in back of the illusion. When I presented my version of a shadow box, it had muslin sides - it worked well. The cloth was attached with velcro.

Biff - White plastic paper, pretty much the same thing as the table cloth paper, comes on a roll I think 4 or 5 feet wide. No creases. Its used for shipping wrap.
If you do a lot of shows, then buying a roll of it would be practical. I believe the company that sells it is Uline. I'll check and post a link a little later tonight.

I second Muslin. Durable and good translucent qualities.

I think you can get white tablecloth in paper form on rolls. You might try Sam's Club.

Recently we used a plyable material LIKE spandex but with the texture of a cyc. I tend NOT to suggest spandex for this sort of things for 1 reason. It sags after a while. And tends more maintenance to fix than this other cloth (whch convieniently is totally escaping my mind for a name this morning) It worked REALLY great. Look sexy under light, was great backlit too. (and not transparent) Will update when I get the name for this - I know it was not muslin. eh - well yah - so use this unamed fabric - will get back to ya haha....
