I've recently seen a version of the metamorphosis performed where the trunk is actually cranked up between two pillars via pulley system. The switch is then performed with the magician standing underneath the trunk.
This is somewhat similar to Copperfield's version of metamporphosis. The only difference being that no fly system is used and it can be done in spaces that may not have a fly system. What is this called? Where can I purchase plans and rights for this version? Ryan |

I believe you are talking about Aerial Exchange. It was made by Creative Illusions.

This was first produced by Creative illusion Las Vegas and they had it in their catalog in the late 90's.
Owen Redwine and Doug Malloy both made units. Did the illusion use spikes as well? Creative illusions called it Breaking The Chains...also Substitution Spiker, Malloy called it Sub-Spiker. This is not something you want to make at home, you need a professional builder. I would call Bill Smith to have it built.

Thanks Zigmont. Right after I posted it, I remembered who made it. Thanks anyway.

Aerial Exchange has a pole in the middle of the illusion and a base. The Box rides up and down the pole (no crank)
The Sub Spiker has a set of steps (with crank). Which one did it look like? Ken Whitaker of Creative Illusion died last year so I don't know how this affected the company.

Thanks for your help everyone! I just checked out a pic of Aerial Exchange online. This is VERY close to what I'm talking about. The illusion that I saw did not use spikes and the trunk flew up in-between four pillars (sorry, I originally said two), one pillar on each corner.
I am inquiring about this as I am currently working on magic for a theatrical production. Basically two characters need to get into the trunk, after the trunk flies up we would like some pyro flashes and or confetti cannons, the box flips open and is empty. The two characters are now in the back of the house. So, I wouldn't use the illusion for an actual metamorphosis switch. It's just a cheaper, safer, and more portable method of flying a box, connecting pyro charges, and getting actors where they need to be. It's also safer as they will be a VERY safe distance from the pyro. Ryan |

Dear Ryan,
You may also want to check Rand Woodbury's "Illusionworks 2" with a similar idea by George Kimery. It's called "Kimery's Original Suspended Sub-Trunk". Best regards, D |

DG: I agree the Chalet Suspended Sub Trunk is the best. "Aerial Exchange" never did much for me. I think Roger Caps in Nashville helped with this illusion in some way.

As you are not using this for an exchange, it sounds like you are describing the "Vanishing Princess of Thebes" an old Thayer illusion. It uses (if my memory serves me) the original "thick base" principle. At the start of the illusion, the base is really only 3-4" thick all around. During the performance the back goes down to
add the space for the vanish. Hinged at the front, springs at the back. Our Crystal Cube (26" square) illusion works on the reverse, after the girl is produced, surrounded, on a dance floor, the walls are all see-through and the base is now only 3-4" thick. A lay person cannot see how it is done from 2-3' away. Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"
