Denny, I had the pleasure of meeting you several months ago when I came down for the Kostya Kimlat lecture. My question: any plans on opening any more shops? And if so, might I suggest Gettysburg (sorry for being selfish, but I so badly want a shop nearby). Do you have any suggestions for someone who wants to open one? I'd love to open one here someday, but I know nothing of running a business. There is nothing like hanging out in a good magic shop--the time just flies, and I've learned so many things and met so many great people. My problem is that I have to drive well over an hour to visit a shop. And now that the local government is closing Barry's Magic shop (emminent domain--they want to install a sidewalk) in Wheaton, MD, that's one less to visit. Thanks. -Jason R. Hade

Hi Jason,
You are correct....There is NOTHING like hanging out in a good magic shop. In all honesty, I sometimes regret getting off the road and opening a magic shop, much less two of them. The hours, the minimal profit, etc. are all negatives. The positives really don't outweigh the negatives. If you look through magic history you will find literally thousands of magic shop ventures that have folded within a year or two. Yes, we all have dreams of opening our own shop and just playing with magic all the time. Unfortunately, that is not how it works. All my time is spent on paperwork, emails, packing, shipping, etc. There's not time for a regular life much less time to fool around with magic tricks and watch DVDs. I barely even find time to read the new books that I would like to read. No...opening another magic shop is a definite NO. In fact, I really do hope to eventually move the entire operation to my shop in Las Vegas. That's really where I want to lounge around and take it easy in my older years. The only suggestion I would have for someone thinking about opening a magic shop is DON'T DO IT!! It seems like the magic shops that make it "financially" profitable are the ones who sell to tourists at overinflated prices or the internet discounters and the ones who sell "knock offs." We, as magicians, continue to support this practice by continuously buying from them. We need to be more educated in the "knock off" field and need to take a stance against unethical practices. If we would stand together on this, each of our major cities would probably eventually have a good magic shop to go to. With a "Walmart" mentality we will all eventually eliminate the real magic shop. |
