Our instructor last night told us that toward the end of our classes the "clown store" will be coming in with a selection of various items for purchase.
She said they have several varieties of noses, but that she had personally rejected at least fifty as not suitable. (whatever the heck that means! x rated noses perhaps???) If they have a wide variety to offer and my instructor has allready eliminated fifty..that means their were probably over a hundred to originaly choose from. My mind just has to think...my god! how many ways can you possibly design a clown nose? I mean, how many variations can you invent on "red and round"???? Inquiring clown minds want to know!

1 - Put a slit in a foam sphere
2 - Cast a thin hollow latex nose (the variety of shapes is, therefore, infinite) and apply with adhesive, color as desired. 3 - A sledgehammer, a willing friend, and some awesome painkillers. |

Daffydoug,
I'm a graduate of Ringling's Clown College (Class 0f 1991). One of the things we did there was have plaster molds of our 'real' face made. Then with modeling putty we built a nose on our plaster face that suited our clown character. We then made a mold of that in which we could mold latex noses that were unique to each and everyone of us. So to answer your question of how many different ones can there be - infinite (oops - Just noticed Ross pointed this out in the above post). And they don't all have to be red either. Who is it you're taking this class from? Just curious ... Cap'n Mike ========================

Sounds like your instructor has been sniffing spirit gum....if she is the same one you mention in your other post maybe you need to find another clown class. Or better yet go take an improv class or acting class. Not to belittle what you are doing but I considering good clowning as an art form, and as soon as someone tells you what you can and can not do with art they are censors. What makes her decision about the acceptability of a nose right?
A good teacher should supply the tools and expertise but allow you to find your own way. Another rant...maybe I should cut back on my coffee. Noseless since '96 Kevin |

Leon McBride makes roughly 25-30 different ProNoses for clowns. They range from molded noses that barely cover the tip to a variety of full nose models. You can also make them from sponge balls, stryofoam balls, putty, latex, foam and more. I saw a nose once made from a bottle cap. You're limited solely by your imagination. I also agree with Kevin...any instructor who limits your creative input is someone to avoid.

Choosing the right nose is a big...or small decision..........according to you clown character.
I think that should be your decision. There's nothing wrong with an instructor making suggestions or offering guidance and advice, but I don't feel they should eliminate choices without you being involved. It sounds like the instructor is making choices based on her own personal preferences. If not, what other reason does can she offer for nose being "not suitable". What is not suitable to her might be perfectly suitable to some. I think it would difficult to tell which nose you want right off anyway. My clown character developed over time. I started out with a longer nose than I ended up with. (That's what you get for being an honest clown!) Has she even seen her class in makeup yet? I would think I would need to see each student in their clown makeup and maybe even their costume before I could make a decision to "reject" a nose style or not. Then there is the character element. That takes some time sometimes. If the clown store comes and you cannot find the right nose for you just remember that there may be other styles available. After class, go find one on your own. As Skip and maybe others have said, Pro Nose has a lot of different styles with various shapes, sizes, and even color. It's quite possible that you might find something that seems right now but you may want to change later on once you finalize your character, costume, and makeup. Regan

I think one thing people tend to forget is that a clown is a charicature of human beings. The way he or she moves, the way he looks, the way he thinks, the way he acts. A charicature is an exagguration, from full blown over-the-top to much more subtle and minimal and everywhere in between.
Study people everywhere you go and pick out the things that you find humorous, not as a way to make fun of the person, but as some mannerisms or actions and personality that you could build into a character. As many facial features, body types, etc. as there are in people, there are just as many that can be made into a clown. Perhaps study clown photos from the past. They had GREAT faces then!! (and great noses!). Sandy |

But I agree..it does fel like she is a censor..or at least putting clowns in a box labeled "tradition". I'm trying to learn from this (she has been clowning over twenty years...so she obviously can teach me oodles. But man, I wish she would just loosen up! Last night I purchased my pro knows (sp?) and I must say, I now see where I was blind! There are indeed a thousand different ways to make a nose!
