I need an 1888 English Penny for a Jack The Ripper routine and am hoping someone can help me locate one at a good price. With the treasures the visitors here aquire I am hoping someone may have a source for this.
I found one on eBay for under $5.00 and didn't pick it up several months ago. Now searching to no luck. Thanks for any help anyone can provide. |

I got a bunch of 1880s pennies off Ebay - they pop up quite a lot - just put it in their search engine... I can't give you mine as I do a bunch of Ripper effects myself... and mine are kind of worn anyway...

I had a box of old English pennies that (1) a fellow mage at a club meeting years ago tried to steal from me and (2) did mysteriously vanish a couple of years ago, anyway. You only lose the things you especially want to keep.

The 4 pence coin 1888 (Maundy Money) I use as a starter in the routine, is indeed very small and extremely rare.
I think only 4488 have been produced that year as token offered by the Queen to the poors of London. A real symbolic object in the routine and another little secret unveiled... |

I think your best option is to contact some coin dealer, perhaps in the UK: I've seen the coin a couple of times (not cheap!) but only at reputable dealers...

Sibbie,
I would suggest finding a local coin shop and seeing what they have. I think I pay about a dollar, at most two for the ones I find. Realize the condition will be worn, a lot. Also, if you have any celtic fiars in your area, try to check them out. I found a good bunch of old english pennies at a local faire, one of the vendors had a big box of them. I just had to sort for the ones I wanted. Kay

I've tried local coin dealers to no avail. I found one coin at an online shop but they wanted $25.00 which is simply to much for the routine in question. The coin itself isn't worth that much. It's just finding that date.

With a bit of epoxy, a steady hand, a dentist's pick and a squirt of copper paint, you could transform an 1889 0r 1886 penny into an 1888 one.

Key is a get a "lot" of English pennies from 1880s- that what I did - I ended up with 3 1888 pennies...
The other thing to remember is if you are using the coins as a "texture" atmosphere thing vs. a number force etc... it really doesn't have to be 1888 - Jack or victims would have carried pennies that might have been older than 1888... why freshly minted ? Seriously! Having an old 1885 or 1883 coin is still creepy if you patter and present correctly.... and those coins are cheap!

I bought mine right here in Coral Gables at a coin store for collectors. Are you using this for my or Alexandre's Jack The Ripper routines? If so you don't need to have a 1888 coin exactly. An earlier one will do. Mine is from 1885. Anyway both routines are featured in Alexandre's Black School and mine is also in my old eBook Seven Past Midnight. Just curious what the routine is you're using this coin for.

I need it for a routine by Peter Marucci in his "Jack the Ripper" manuscript called "Dear Boss."

My own "Jack the Ripper" routine start with an 1888 Four Pence.
A four pence coin was all the difference between life and death in 1888... it was the price required for a place in a night asylum of Whitechapel. And Mary Ann Polly Nichols didn't have one when she met Jack. So, I understand the importance of the correct item, but the coin is so small that no one can read the date on it especially if you don't give the coin to close inspection. So who cares about the real date (except an obsessional Curator), just tell people that 1888 is the date on the coin. Magical storytellers are professional liars, isn't it ? |
