I am looking for information for a couple of hat gags that I would like to do something similar in my show. Unfortunately, I can only give a description of them and not specifics.
The first is one I have seen done by a few different people, where they reach "way down" (arms length) into the hat and pull things out of it. The second, I saw on an old film (maybe Charlie Chaplin?), where the hat is chased all over the stage. While I know basically how they operate, I am interested in any information on this subject. If anyone can point me in the right direction to learn the details, or a video of these being performed I would appreciate it.
Thanks,

Well, for one, learning from performance videos is great as it also shows you other elements like staging, drama, timing, purpose....Keep watching those Charlie Chaplin videos.
Here is some stuff I found that you might be able to use: http://www.blanketfort.com/juggling/hat.html http://www.dube.com/dube/index.html (go to videos and then Hat juggling) Also look at Charlie Frye's ECCENTRICKS 1, 2 and 3 http://www.trickswithhats.org/resources/......p;pid=40 |

For your first Q look in to Sylvester the jester, he may have a tape call the Sylvester pitch… I think he show how he produces thing from his hat…using this idea...
And for your second Q you can see this on a movie called "betty and joone" 1993 staring Johnny Depp Plot summary: In a small town, an auto mechanic named Benny is devoted to taking care of his mentally ill sister, Joon, who can barely function alone in the real world despite being a talented artist. This relatively stable situation is shaken up when Benny is obliged in a poker game to welcome another player's relative, Sam, to his home for a few days. When Sam arrives, he quickly makes an impression with his quietly eccentric ways which emulate the antics of the great silent movie comedian, Buster Keaton. Without Benny's full knowledge, Sam and Joon finds themselves drawn to each other to the fullest degree. However when Benny finds out, it creates a rift in the siblings as they struggle to accept their relationship is profoundly changing with the presence of this odd newcomer. |

This is the movement artist who worked Johnny Depp to teach him all of his physical comedy bits for "Benny & Joon" (you misspelled it twice). There are a lot of nice, "classic", little comic bits of business used by Depp's character in the film. For some hat manipulation ideas, here are a couple of links to some of my practice videos... one of some solo work and one with my partner, doing some two man/five hat stuff...
