This has some nice footage of Grock that I haven't seen before. I also appreciate the loving commentary. Here we get a chance to see Grock working with two different partners. As my partner and I are continually discovering, it is much easier to define one's own character in relation to a partner's character, than it is to define one's own character in the void of a solo piece. Our duo work has helped me find myself more clearly as an individual on stage, which I am finding tremendous success in carrying over into my solo performances. We are trying very hard to only put the truth onstage. When we are stuck in the creative process, we simply ask ourselves, "what is the most honest choice?" For example, Matthew packs big and plays bigger. I like to pack really small. Matthew likes to make a lot of noise (he's a drummer). I can't stand that. We choose to use these sources of true conflict in our friendship as opportunities onstage to create comedy. And knowing what I don't like is as important as what I do like, in regard to enriching and specifying character. With a stronger sense of character (my own personal character, mind you, not something that I'm layering on top) I find my in-the-moment choices to be more immediate and appropriate to my performances. Grock always leaves me with much to consider. Best wishes, on a chilly Thursday afternoon, -Brian |

Brian, you are truly a student and teacher of the art of clowning. Thank-you very much for the link. You are so right about your character being stonger with having a partner. It's the ying and yang. You don't know good unless you know evil.
Even in everyday life people strive for identities and can only do this by comparison with others. It's like when a new band comes out, we always compare it to similar bands and to other not similar bands to understand its identity. I have been looking for a performing partner for a while and it has been hard to find the right person with talent (in performing, not skill...although that helps too) but am finding it hard. I find I need somebody to work off of to make a powerful show (in my illusion show which has a definate storyline). Once again thanks. |

Nice discourse Brian...Grock is amazing. I posted before about how conflicy makes for great theater. This conflict is so much easier to discover when working in tandem then solo.
I also think you and I will be in China with Brenn together. Looking forward to meeting you. Kevin |
