Sir or Madam
Between approximately 1000-1100hrs(GMT) on most days, The Magic Café appears to not work at all or the pages take an eternity to load. Is something happening accross the pond that causes this? No complaints, by the way - I appreciate that maintenance has to be done. :) Roger |

I will check this out around 1:00 PM (EDT) to see what I can see. Gene's at work, but I'll bring this to his attention when he gets home.

Roger,
I asked a similar question here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......0&15 Gene gives an answer to why it might happen. |

Just wondering if its just ME or if there might be an issue that you techies are not aware of. As I say, it happens every time I'm on-line during the morning here in the UK (10am - 11am ish) Dunno the time differences accross the US but Café timings are five hours behind us here if that gives you a clue. |

10-11am ish would be about 5-6am here, give or take. There are some things that run in the wee hours of the morning (our time), though I don't know if they're still running at that time. (We run full backups every morning - databases, files, everything.) I'd have to be awake and watching things to know for sure, and to be honest I'm rarely out of bed that early in the morning. Still, I'll see if I can find out somehow.

Gene - you guys pay for my flight and I'll do it!
And by the way Silverking - that is the most frightening avatar I've ever seen! I just know I'm going to have nightmares over that! |

Tell you what - you pay my fare to go there and I'll check it on your end. I've always wanted to visit another country.
For that matter, I'd even like to be able to catch a magic convention sometime, but they're always too far away.

The time difference is 5 hours from GMT to EST. However, that does change to 4 hours when we switch our clocks over to EDST.
To those who don't know: GMT = Greenwich Mean Time EST = Eastern Standard Time EDST = Eastern Daylight Savings Time I actually had the opportunity to stand right on the point of 0 longitude in Greenwich. Beautiful place with an incredible view. Was there in 1999 as part of a tour with Astronomy magazine to see the last solar eclipse of the last millenium. Too bad it got rained out where I was.

Aha clynim - then it's five hours again as GMT becomes BST - British Summer Time (or DST Daylight Saving Time) Our clocks usually change on the last Saturdays in March and October.

It all happened again today - but this time I timed everything. (I know - I should get out more.) I have my regular Café pages bookmarked within Explorer so quickly clicked around these. Then, at 10.12am BST (5.12am EST?) the Café 'shut down' for ten minutes. None of my bookmarks would work. Two of them timed out whilst two more, which I started later quoted at the foot of the page: All content & postings Copyright © 2001-2007 Steve Brooks. All Rights Reserved. Roger, you're right. I really should have gone on a trip to the Mediterranean to see that eclipse. Could have spent my money in Greece or Rome. Now THAT would have been interesting. So much history in all three countries that I would barely know where to begin. The only thing I did NOT do that I regret was to visit the British Museum and see the Egyptian exhibit. I've heard it's one of the biggest and best outside of Egypt itself.
As for GMT, I keep at least one thing in my house set for it. Partly out of habit, partly because I'm a ham radio operator and that's what I use when I make an international contact and enter it into a log book.

I'm posting this in an existing thread since it may be a related problem:
Just wanted to report that since about 4 days ago, I am not able to access ANY page on this server at any time of the day or night. Not once. I simply get a Server Not Found error in the browser after a long wait. But... if I connect through a proxy server, the forum accepts me even though that of course is painfully slow. I therefore assume that my entire ip or ip-range is being blocked by the server for some reason. (I live in Norway). If that is so, I assume that this is a mistake since if you guys had wanted to get rid of me, it would have been more efficient to simple delete my account. I have tried different browsers. I have called my isp who have error checked my connection and made sure there are no blocks at their end. I have also today installed a new router to ensure proper routing through ports and so on. Of the entire internet, so far only this server has proved inaccessible to me.

Roger, this past weekend I confirmed that backups are indeed being run at that time. (That's about 5am here.) Among the backups is a complete daily backup of the Café database. The backup process goes from table to table and when it gets to the "live" data (not just the search data, which is a duplicate of the live data) the backup process takes precedence over new page requests until the backup for the live data is complete. How long it takes depends on how busy the server is at the time, so I'm afraid I can't give you any definite start/stop times.

Amazing, there are a handful of IP addresses blocked on the server. Without knowing what your IP is, there's no way for me to know if it's our server that's blocking you. Can you find out from your ISP what IP address (or range) you use? You can PM the details to me.
One thing you can try is a traceroute. I don't know the Mac equivalent, but in WindowsXP you go to Start>Programs>Accessories>CommandPrompt. Type this in and hit enter: tracert themagiccafe.com Hopefully the results will show where you're getting stopped.

Hi Gene. Thank you for your swift response.
Traceroute on the Mac is probably performed easiest through the Network Utility application bundled with OSX. (for future readers with similar needs: Applications/Utilities/Network Utility) However it simply yields the following response: traceroute: unknown host themagiccafe.com I tried it with www in front too to be on the safe side. It is like the server is simply gone. Off the radar completely like it was down. But it isn't. Have PM'ed you about my ip address. Thank you.

Oh... and another odd thing... Possibly unrelated as well:
Whenever accessing the forums throught the proxy server as I am doing now, the logo is distorted. I don't know what that's all about.

"unknown host themagiccafe.com"
This usually means the domain name isn't recognized by the ISP's DNS server. Is the proxy you use through the same ISP?

Let's see... I don't really know how this works. The proxy I use is something fast and simple that even I was able to install: Privoxy, turned on and off as needed by the Torbutton extension for Firefox.
What it actually is or how it works, I have no idea about I'm afraid. It works tho.
