Cody,
I know that you have done much research on the ACAAN (Any Card At Any Number) theme/plot in card magic. Can you share any insights from your quest? Any thoughts on what you feel to be the current Holy Grail of ACAAN? Also, does this plot play as well for laypersons as it does for magicians? Thanks, Keith Mitchell |

Keith,
Ah...the "any card any number" quest! I think I have spend too much time thinking about this plot in my life! One of my hobbies used to be "collecting methods" for this effect. Some solutions are better than others, some are practical, some are not so practical, and some are just plain interesting from a theoritical viewpoint. I have been doing some version of this effect for as long as I can remember. The majority of the time I perform "my version" it is for magicians only...such as lectures or conventions. I actually have 3 pet methods that I will use from time time. Magicians all over the world seem to be facinated with the plot. I am not sure why...when it comes down to it...there is only a 1 in 52 chance of any card being at any number. I personally never had too much success selling this effect to a lay audience...something like the Invisible Deck usually got a better response! Again, this is just one mans experience. Anyone interested in this plot would be wise to check out John Born's book, "Meant To Be"...it's a keeper! A little bird told me that John was releasing a second book on the ACAN plot...there is one version that I hope will appear in there that is pretty close to "the grail"! Also, I think I remember some talk about Bob Farmer's version being released soon? Take Care, Cody S. Fisher

Welcome Cody,
I'm looking forward to Bob Farmer's BAMMO DEKRONOMICON too. The conditions just sound impossible. I guess that's the great appeal of the "ultimate" ACAAN. What are your thoughts on Barrie Richardson and Alain Nu's version? Bosco |

I too am looking forward to Bob's version...he's a pretty clever guy!
I also think the Barry Richardson and Alain Nu versions are wonderful solutions. For my personal taste the Richardson version has just too many calcualtions that must be done "on the fly". My "quick math" is just not that good while I am trying interact with spectators! I think both are great...but for me...the search continutes! Cody

My version, the Bammo Dekronomicon, is getting ever closer to release. It's a completely different take from anything anyone else has done. I also have two additonal versions that are completely different, but just as easy. I haven't decided what to do with these yet.
(Send me an email and I'll add you to the notice list on release.) I've been fooling around with this trick for years but only recently came up with something I like (i.e., easy to do, but really deceptive). The Richardson version -- the one in his book -- has a flaw and doesn't work, the math is off (e.g., there is no solution for AD @ 26). However, his impromptu version is really good (I think he sells it as a manuscript). I've had excellent success with the general effect -- but you really have to sell it by emphasizing the thousands of possibilities -- 52 cards, 52 numbers, etc. |
