I just bought the book A Complete Book Of Asrah, from Stevens after I read about it in a review in the Linking Ring Magazine. It should arrive soon.
The write up on it sounds very inviting. In the magazine it lists for $130.00, Steven is selling it for $77.50 Here is what Stevens Magic Emporium says about it... Quote:
A first time book on the legendary illusion—The Asrah by Dr. Scandia. This is the most complete book ever written on the illustrious effect. This book gives you step-by-step instructions on over 60 pages. Contains hundreds of illustrations: Tables, Forms, Back Drops, Performing, Music, Lighting, Rigging, Couches and Covers. If you have ever wanted to construct and perform the Asrah...this is the book for you! Only 200 copies printed. Order now and save! Regular price is $130.00, get yours at this great introductory $77.50 price! Linking rings gave it a nice review but it appears to be a book only for "die-hard" illusionists who want to know this kind of stuff. I love levitations and this book sounds like it is for me. I am placing it here in this section because it isn't a review, but to let others know about this book. I think this statement will amke it valuable like Osborne's Black book: Only 200 copies printed. Fred Walker was kind enough to take me back stage and show me his home-made Asrah, and how simple it can be made and used. Just looking at the parts was enlighting. I do want to make one and this book should tell me what I want to know. Supposingly, and I know others, asked about forms, all this information is in this book. I will add the information to the sticky post above on Osborne Illusion plans. Only listing the various types of Asrahs. Dennis

Hmm, looks like a good price too. Please do give us a review once you've received it. I may have to pick this one up as well.

Sounds like a very informative book. I ordered it! Along with Max Maven's NOTHING DVD which I have wanted for a while.
Now I feel all special, being one of the elite 200 and all. --Jack |

As for a review, it will be loop-sided because I am a lover of levitation illusions and I do love the standard Asrah. Now all of them!!! and forms!!! how can I not give a positive review.

I have the book and, in my opinion, it is well worth the price. If you have an interest in asrah, the book contains a lot of really great material. There are designs for numerous forms and tables, along with a lot of tips about riggings, backdrops, etc. One thing to note...in order to actually build one of these things you have to be a VERY talented craftsperson. It is not a project for the beginning builder by any means. If you have the building expertise, or have access to someone who does, this book is the only one you would ever need to build and perform the effect.

Thanks for the review! It was all the prompting I needed to get off my bum and order the book. It should be a nice addition to the library...

As I said, looking at Fred Mitchell's form and table, I find it not as difficult as I once suspected. The hardest part is creating the form. The table used spandex on half of it, making it a simple dropdown. The rigging was also simple. The stage ceiling needed only one piece of lumber screwed to it and that lumber contained four eye hooks. Some spider thread lighting presentation and it looks really good.
It still required three persons to operate. The magician, a Stage hand and the assistant.

Well sadly, I'm not a top level craftsman. But such people are out there. I have tried building my own stuff before and I think in the future I plan to stick with people who have much more skill at it than I do.
Can't wait for the book. Asrah is my favorite style of levitation, and it continues to suprise audiences. --Jack |

What is the difference between European and other Asrah's?

Happy,
I think it is the form. One "accordion" folds and one is a wire.

I received this book today, and it is definitely worth the money. I have access to a lot of Asrah information via many books in my library and, honestly, I couldn't think of anything that wasn't covered in this book.
I just hope "Dr. Scandia" intends to make this the first of a series...

Dennis is correct, the European Asrah does not use rigging, but operates (to a degree) on a "zombie"-related principal. The form collapses at the end. This allows you to do it under many different conditions. I have never used any of the European models, though I know three people who have. They did not have any good things to say about the effect or the form. Again, this is second-hand critique so make of it what you will. In the book several collapsible forms are discussed. Also, as Dennis stated, making the tables is not the hard part. It is creating the forms. The process is long and must be done perfectly or you will run into problems. If you can do it, it is still one of the greatest effects in stage magic...good luck!

I receive the book "A Complete Book Of Asrah" today and I only glanced through it. It has numerous forms, tables and rigging, a small bit on lighting as well as tips. It is what I expected and one can build an asrah from what is presented in this book. Some forms break down as well as some tables.
This book is for those who sincerely like to try building one or want to understand this fantastic levitation. As I said earlier Quote:
As for a review, it will be loop-sided because I am a lover of levitation illusions and I do love the standard Asrah. Now all of them!!! and forms!!! how can I not give a positive review. One of the tables and the form are like the one I saw used by Fred Mitchell, however, there is a slight difference in the form corners. Tomorrow I hope to read it cover to cover.
