Flare by Alpha Magic
http://www.alphamagic.com/Flare.htm To start off with, I give it a thumbs up. But is it something new? Absolutely not. You can find all the information you need in the book Chemical Magic. But is this worth buying? Sure why not? What it is... It's basically their set up of the chemical reaction. It's very good, and they give you some of the material needed. They also include a template and a gimmick. Here is what the effect looks like in real life. You pull out a cigarette and tap it a little. Either in your hand, on the cigarette box, or on a cigarette case. You hold the cigarette up, it begins to smoke, and then a flame, and it's now lit. Can you smoke it then? Sure why not? Are the chemicals dangerous? Not near as dangerous as what's in the cigarette already. So hears the big kicker... Can it be done with a borrowed cigarette? Short answer, no. Long answer... Why not? But of course you are going to have to do a switch. And technically that is not a borrowed cigarette, but the spectators won't know. So it will at least look like it. Of course, you will have to make sure it's the same brand as the switch. But I don't smoke... so I plan on doing the switch. The local bar I go to sells only camel cigarettes. So most people smoke those. So it shouldn't be that difficult to do. Now a few thoughts about the DVD... It is done rather nice. There are a few blur spots, but nothing really bad. It did come nicely packaged and seeled. It is not a homemade video. Now then the chemicals that they tell you to use can not be found at a drug store, like they say it can. You can easily order them online though, but... You may find one a pet store or a pond store, but probably not. And the other can be found at a hobby store such as Hobby Lobby. All in all... It's not bad, and it's actually a Jim Pace idea and they do credit him. Plus there is this Asian girl on there that has some wicked looking hands. They are all pointy and maniacal looking. I think she looks cool. Randi |

Randirain,
I order it about a week ago and I haven't receive it yet. But, I am a little confused with your post. You mean that the package does not include all the necesairy materials to perform this effect? I am from Greece and finding chemics is more difficult than someone would thing. Thanks in advance, Titanas

No... the chemicals do not come with it.
You get everything else though. But one chemical I bought on ebay. It's not that hard to find. The other, you make soap out of. Hint hint. Not that hard to find either. Randi |

Sounds really cool, thanks for the review!
How long does the setup take? Reset? |
|||||||||
randirain Inner circle Fort Worth, TX 1650 Posts |
Setup takes about 5 minutes.
Reset... no reset. Once it's used, it's done. But you can make lots of them and have them read at any time. They don't go bad or anything. Randi |

They actually suggest that smoking this post-effect is safe?
That is to say, no less safe than smoking a normal cigarette? And thy have research to back this up?
It's all in the reflexes.

Let me clarify this...
They DO NOT say that it is safe to smoke. I said it is. And I base that on the fact that cigarettes are not safe to smoke. Just like... It's OK to hit your head with your shoe, if you are already hitting your head with a hammer. The gimmick that you make is burnt up before you would start smoking the dangerous toxic smoke that is cigarettes. Randi |

Sure it's bad to hit your head with a shoe, but isn't it worse to hit your head with a shoe that has a nail sticking out of it? My question is, does it make the cigarette even more harmful?
Does it affect the taste?

My question is, does it make the cigarette even more harmful? More harmful? I doubt it. One is a natural chemical that is in all vegies that we eat. The other... I looked up and it doesn't give any harmful toxic warnings. Just explosive warnings. As far as taste? I did find this... "It has a sweet taste and is odourless" So who knows... I don't smoke and no one has said anyhting. Randi |

The following is from an MSDS for the chemical used...
"Inhalation of dust will produce irritation to gastro-intestinal or respiratory tract, characterized by burning, sneezing and coughing. Severe over-exposure can produce lung damage, choking, unconsciousness or death." another MSDS for the same chemical reads... "Inhalation: Aspiration may lead to pulmonary edema. Causes respiratory tract irritation with possible burns. May cause central nervous system effects such as nausea and headache. " Smoking the treated cigarette is certainly *not* the same as the direct inhalation of the pure chemical, however, considering the warnings above, it would be wise not to take any chances. MS |

Just to let you know, I received Flare and have also purchased all of the items necessary in order to perform it. I had a question though in regards to your comment about the dangers of smoking the cigarette. I was hoping that perhaps you could fill me in as to where you got your information regarding the potential hazards/health effects of smoking the specially prepared Flare cigarette, as I didn't feel the DVD really covered this. I don't mind smoking a cigarette, though I must admit I'm a bit hesitant smoking the specially prepared Flare cigarette . Thanks in advance. |

Yes, Phatmeat...
As I said, I have no scientific evidence. And I did say in my last post that they do not cover this. But the fact remains that cigarettes are extremely hazardous. If you are willing to smoke cigarettes, than I see no reason why you can't smoke a flare cigarette. The chemical is burnt up already. And MSDS sheets... Look up the chemicals found in cigarettes and you will find much dangerous warnings than any chemical in Flare. How about Nicotine... Very hazardous in case of skin contact (permeator), of ingestion. Hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant), of eye contact (irritant), of inhalation. Severe over-exposure can result in death. Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target organs damage. Repeated exposure to a highly toxic material may produce general deterioration of health by an accumulation in one or many human organs. Nicotine is a poison. Here are some other chemicals... Acetone - A flammable, colorless liquid used as a solvent. It's one of the active ingredients in nail polish remover. The tobacco industry refuses to say how acetone gets into cigarettes. Ammonia - A colorless, pungent gas. The tobacco industry says that it adds flavor, but scientists have discovered that ammonia helps you absorb more nicotine - keeping you hooked on smoking. Arsenic - A silvery-white very poisonous chemical element. This deadly poison is used to make insecticides, and it is also used to kill gophers and rats. Benzene - A flammable liquid obtained from coal tar and used as a solvent. This cancer-causing chemical is used to make everything from pesticides to detergent to gasoline. Benzoapyrene - A yellow crystalline carcinogenic hydrocarbon found in coal tar and cigarette smoke. It's one of the most potent cancer-causing chemicals in the world. Butane - A hydrocarbon used as a fuel. Highly flammable butane is one of the key ingredients in gasoline. Cadmium - A metallic chemical element used in alloys. This toxic metal causes damage to the liver, kidneys, and the brain; and stays in your body for years. Formaldehyde - A colorless pungent gas used in solution as a disinfectant and preservative. It causes cancer; damages your lungs, skin and digestive system. Embalmers use it to preserve dead bodies. Lead - A heavy bluish-gray metallic chemical element. This toxic heavy metal causes lead poisoning, which stunts your growth, and damages your brain. It can easily kill you. Propylene Glycol - A sweet hygroscopic viscous liquid used as antifreeze and as a solvent in brake fluid. The tobacco industry claims they add it to keep cheap "reconstituted tobacco" from drying out, but scientists say it aids in the delivery of nicotine (tobaccos active drug) to the brain. Turpentine - A colorless volatile oil. Turpentine is very toxic and is commonly used as a paint thinner. You smoke these poisons and you worry about other chemicals? I find that very interesting. I don't get it, but I don't smoke. Randi |

Hi Randi,
Thanks for your reply. You bring up a good point. I'm already well aware of all the dangerous substances they put into cigarettes, the byproducts of igniting them, and their potential hazards. I am not a smoker by the way. There are only a few occasions when I may smoke a cigarette: (1) Presentation purposes for a magic routine, and (2) After I've had a few too many drinks and somebody offers me one, which I of course accept lol -- both rare circumstances. I guess my hesitation had to do with the fact that an additional and uncommon chemical (by uncommon I mean not ordinarily found in cigarettes)was being added to the mix and while I was well aware of what's already in a cigarette and how it can affect you, I was unaware of any potential health hazards of smoking the particular substance used to achieve this effect. Basically I just wanted to become informed for the sake of knowledge. Of course I didn't just post my question without conducting my own research. I just figured I'd ask you what information you may have come across since you commented on the dangers of the chemical -- and you of course answered my question. Thanks again for your reply, I appreciate it. |

I haven't had a chance to try the effect out myself yet, but I figured that it is a possibility that there can still be remnants of it left that an individual may inhale if they decide to smoke the cigarette. I do, however, think that you are right in regards to it being no more hazardous than smoking a normal cigarette. But like I said, I was merely curious about the information you had and where you got it. Thanks |

"being no more hazardous than smoking a normal cigarette"
Basing this assumption on anecdotal evidence is dangerous at best. The chemicals already in a cigarettes (and listed above) are in levels *one thousand* to *one million* (micrograms and nanograms) times less than the amount of chemical (milligrams) used in this effect. To suggest it is "safe" because "it can't be any worse than what's already there" is an irrational and irresponsible argument. This old effect is certainly a wonderful one, and makes for a fantastic magical or pyro-kinetic display. But as with all chemical magic, care should always be taken on the side of caution. Best best- don't smoke any cigarette. If you absolutely must, don't smoke one treated with this chemical; why take the chance? MS |

The byproducts of Flare are completely harmless. I can't say what the byproducts are as I would be risking exposure, but I can assure you that its perfectly safe. This issue has been throughly researched before Flare was released.
