Hello there. As I said in the last topic...I really want this pickpocketing forum to become a really good forum...
I am going to answer the first plain old question that everyone asks, "What pickpocketing sources are out there." I will name them and give them a star rating out of 10. The higher the star, the better source it is. 1. Chappy Brazil watch steal dvd. 10/10 2. Mini Course Watch Stealing dvd (coats and bird) 6/10 3. Kevin King. 5/10 4. Jeff Hobson (watch steal segment) 7/10 5. Mark Raffles DVD 7/10 6. James Freedman(Stealing the Show) 6/10 7. Mastering the Art of Pickpocketing 7/10 8. Encyclopedia of pickpocketing dvds (coats and bird) Have not seen. 9. Theatrical Pickpocketing (Ravel) Do not own. 10. Ricki Dunn Pickpocketing Book. 10. Amazing! 11. Go On... Steal Yourself (James Freedman) Do not own 12. How to Pick a Pocket or Two (James Freedman) Sold Out - I would love to see it 13. Michael Finney dvd's. (segment on watch steal) 5/10 14. Eddie Joseph notes (quite old -still good for a read) 6/10 15. Mark Raffles Book - do not own. 16. Complete Course In Pick Pocketing (Pierre Jacques) - Once again do not own. 17. Greg Wilson's (on the spot - pickpocketing section) I learned a lot about how to pickpocket without magic props...its good 8/10 I think that's enough to name....any more that people know? Serious though fellow pickpockets...if you own chappy brazil dvd and ricki dunn pickpocketing book....you should be set. HUGE TIP. You can sit in front of the computer and watch and watch and watch...though until you try it out...you will never sucseed. I usto be scared of taking rolex's...now I shiver when I see them. I crave to take them. Hope this helps....tell me what you think JaY JaY

JaY JaY,
The Ravel book is outstanding. I own the Raffles book and it is good, though a bit pricey IF you can find it. The Freedman booklet, Go On Steal Yourself, is very good in that it is concise and shows what you need to know to pick a few pockets. However, it too I think is overpriced. peculiarone [/quote] |

Though I would say James Freedman's dvd is better than Mark Raffles. 8. Encyclopedia of pickpocketing dvds (coats and bird)6/10 Not too high on my list. This series could of been condensed onto 2 discs. 9. Theatrical Pickpocketing (Ravel) 7/10The only book on Pickpocketing I owned for a long time. Good book, Ricki Dunn's is better. 11. Go On... Steal Yourself (James Freedman) 7/10 Great little booklet, Not enough info in though. Needed more pages in it. 12. How to Pick a Pocket or Two (James Freedman) 8/10 Great Lecture on pickpocketing. 16. Complete Course In Pick Pocketing (Pierre Jacques)9/10 The only book that comes close to Ricki Dunn's. Great info in this little book. Jeff Hobson also has a bit of info on Watch steals on his Jeff Hobson live dvd. Good info if all you want to take are leatherband watches. But there are a lot of dvds out now that teach that, some with other tricks (Finney, Hobson, Still Fancy a pot of Jam) while others just focus on the steal (Watch Stealing by James Coats, Watch Bandit by Kevin King, Chappy Brazil and Charles Bach with their watch steal dvd.) Hope that rounds off your list nicely Jay. |

Jayaweera, good idea compiling this list of resources. Here's some more for completeness sake, including some hard to find ones. I'm taking the liberty of continuing on the list...
- Eddie Joseph: The Art of Body Loading. The opposite of pickpocketing, that is, producing stuff from people's pockets or person, but IMO still worth being in any stage pickpocket's library. - Gentleman Jack Lecture Notes. Notes from an old Swedish master stage pickpocket. Small and not much that isn't in any of the mentioned books, but I enjoyed having it - Techniques of the Professional Pickpocket: Wayne B. Yeager. Some items on street pickpocketing which many of us probably already know, but it also contains illustrations which are suspiciously similar to some in the Ravel book. - Gen articles by Roger Crosthwaite. These are a collection of articles on pickpocketing by Roger Crostwaite which had appeared in the Gen, dealing with watcvhes, wallet,s braces, tie, etc. A technical and purist approach to stage pickpocketing and very recommended reading. Deal both with the misdirection and the finger-flinging. -Pickpocketing for Honest Magicians is a chapter in Dramatic Magic by John Booth. A discourse on the theory of pickpocketing and some of the classic master such as Borra, Majaks, Giovanni, etc - Pick Pocket Stunts by O'Neal Magic. This booklet is just two pages of ideas for stunts that look like pickpocketing - Hey! That's My Wallet by Walt Hudson. Details for presenting a fake pickpocket act i.e. using stooges. - The Art of Stealing Watches. A collection of techniques, lines, ideas. Some of my comments on books in the first list. - Ravel, a great book that makes you want to do stage pickpocketing - Pierre Jacques, good illustrations and ideas if slightly sparse in some text descriptions, maybe because its a translation - Ricki Dunn book, awesome! |

Details for presenting a fake pickpocket act i.e. using stooges. - The Magic of Paul Potassy. both the book and DVD set of the same name contain details of Potassy's cruise ship pickpocket act that is definitely worth exploring. He talks a lot about the in-and-out method so popular in Europe. Some of my comments on the first list. - Ravel, a great book that makes you want to do stage pickpocketing - Pierre Jacques, good illustrations and ideas, although somewhat sparse in text descriptions, maybe because its a translation - Ricki Dunn book, awesome - The James Freedman DVD. The one I have is called Pick a Pocket or Two, I believe it might be slightly different (earlier) to the one available today in USA? |
