One effect that does not seem to get mentioned much is Gene Finnell's , spelling the aces , using the excellent free cut principle.

My favorite version is Randy Wakeman's handling (which was in Apocalypse, I believe, too - I don't have my collection in front of me at this moment. I'm sure that Harry will clarify.) and is seen on his "Lake Tahoe Bar Magic" DVD set as "Spectator on Stage." Not entirely self-working, but minimal sleights and a great effect.
Life is an improv. The game goes on...

...And, as usual, Nick Trost has some dandies in The Card Magic Of Nick Trost.
Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed and Tommy Emmanuel are all you need to study to learn to play guitar.

Paul Daniels had a version of a Dai Vernon self-worker in "Adult Magic" called "You are Magic".
You mix the deck behind your back, take the Aces and push into the deck, (again behind your back), the spectator(s) pushes an indifferent card into the deck 4 times, and gets the Aces each time. I use this all the time - it kills. Bruce |

Regarding the issue of explaining why you have the spectator bury three cards from each pile to the bottoms. I actually mix it up a bit. I might tell them to move two cards to the bottom of the first pile, then four cards to the bottom of the second pile, one card to the bottom of the third pile and finally three cards to the bottom of the fourth pile. I try to make it seem that I am just randomly deciding how many cards to have them bury in each pile. As long as the last pile moves three cards to the bottom it works. I think doing the random number of cards in each pile makes it even more difficult for the spectator to realize what is really happening.

Nick Trost's "Spectator Finds the Aces" is 100% self working and completely brilliant.
It uses no sleights at all, depending instead on the underused Simon Prophecy force and a bit of time misdirection. Completely deceiving for those not aware of the SP force (in other words all laymen, and most magicians). |

It's in Jerry Mentzer's book "Card Cavalcade" (the original, number 1) on page 91. The book is still available from Jerry Mentzer at http://www.magicmethodsonline.com/cbooks.html . At $20, it is a bargain. John

Having read enthusiastic reviews I have a mind to buy that book soon. Just a question. I've found out - doing a search - that the Simon Prophecy Force is in the first volume of Subtle Card Creations. So my question is : is this force force explained in "Card Magic" too, or you can find it only in "Subtle C. Creations" ? |

Hi Galerius
You will only need to buy The Card Magic of Nick Trost book as everything you need is described in the book. All the sleights are taught at the back of the book in appendix form. |

Chad Long's shuffling lesson is a hoot to perform (how can you beat having a spectator false shuffle and cut?)

I'm sure some of the tricks mentioned are like what I'm about to describe, but this is my first learned trick - taught to me - so I don't have a name for it.
In essence, start like most of the other tricks and once you have your four piles just instruct the spectator with what to do (i.e. move one card from this pile to that pile, take 1/2 of this pile and place on top of that one, move this top card over to that other pile, and on and on...). Play it up as long as it takes to thoroughly confuse the spectator and then hit them with the reveal. ***Update*** Just looked into some of the previously mentioned tricks (trying to find a name for my version) and found it is very, very similar to Osterlind's "My Father's Favorite." |
