Greetings,
I was fortunate enough to recieve and advance review copy of Shrinker, the new one man solo illusion from Andrew Mayne. I was debating if I should put this in the stage illusions category however looking over the illusion here, it can be done in many more situations than that. For those of you who wish to see a demo video you can go here: http://itricks.com/store/?p=107 The effect is straight forward. You shrink to the size of a mini me. The package came with the necessary stuff, and instructional DVD. Before even looking over the stuff I decided to pop in the DVD. The DVD is almost 30 minutes and is well done. All of the subtle and imporant details are covered on the DVD and it really helps rather then having a long manuscript to read through for this sort of effect. The DVD starts off with Andrew talking about how he came upon the creation of this effect and refers to Shrink Boy which was an illusion in his Solo X book. He also talks about a few other ideas and concepts he had. Finally he came upon this version of his effect which is highly visual and very pratical. You can tell a lot of time, money, and thinking went into the creation of this. What I like most is there are not any difficult things to do, nothing to "build" necessairly. He goes over the necessary steps of what needs to be done in a detailed manner. You won't be spending another couple hundred bucks supplying stuff to make up the trick unlike some things on the market. IE. Certain levitations and such. The other big thing that comes across is how versatile this illusion really is. The demo shows you the basic effect. In my opinion it is really only limited to your imagination. In this case Andrew doesn't just think outside the box, he walks through it as a dwarf! LOL. Literally. I have been into stage magic for quite sometime and I have begun to see a change in the creative minds of todays top illusion inventors. Either hide the box, make it as little as possible (or least look as little as possible), or get rid of it completely. Andrew has done this before with Bi-Section, Pocket Sawing and others. Andrew covers different ideas on performing the illusion and offers tips and real world suggestions when performing it in a more intimate setting or on the streets. There are plenty of ways to perform this illusion that you can't go wrong if your just a street magic enthusiast or a perform a full blown stage production. There are many ways to perform this, from just Shrinking, to Growing instead. Walking out of a small box as a small person and growing as you move forward. Those of you who are worried about angles need not fear. If you are working a theater with a balcony you can easily perform this and not worry about a top down view. The best thing is you can do this without using a curtain. There is also a method of performing it 360 degrees, similiar to Bisection in a way. He even shows you ways to perform this in a door way of a friends home. If someone asks to see you do this while looking at you from the back... well he covers that too! This illusion contains huge potential, is versatile, and is right up there in my opinion with Fearsons Fantastic Flotation, and his Laser Sawing which Copperfield now has the rights too. It only took me about 10-15 minutes to get everything ready to where I could play with the illusion in front of the mirror. Everything appears to be in proper proportion. I look forward to doing this for my wife later on. Even a bit of a big guy like me can do this illusion. If you don't get this, you will be sorry! Actually, I hope he decides not to release it so I can be one of a few who have it, but that is only wishful thinking. Illusion of the year, Shrinker! |

Just another note, someone asked me about how the angles are, you can check above in my previous post. Also there is a really cool way of doing Shrinker called the Shrinker Appearance, and the Surrounded Appearance. I had an idea of making a packing crate for this to dress it up if using this idea on stage but using a cardboard box seems more natural. There is no need to worry about angles as Andrew provides many great ways of using Shrinker in many situations.

I would not say you have to be sporty to do this. As far as being heavyweight, I got a bit of a gut but find no problem with it. Of course someone like Dom Delawise it may find this to be difficult. Hope that makes sense lol

I was also fortunate enough to receive and advance review copy. I was going to wait and post my review of this after I got some video of me doing it for live people. But since Majestic12 posted this great review I thought I'd share some of my thoughts here.
Majestic12 - Thanks for writing my review for me.. I say that because I agree with everything you said so you saved me the time to write it myself. I've only performed mine twice for family and friends but they loved it. Just to give you an idea of how you can really build this illusion up. The first person I performed it for was my girlfriend. She was in the living room watching TV. I was in the kitchen. I purposefully dropped an ironing board so it made a loud bang. Fallowed by me letting out a loud "OUCH!". She ran into the kitchen to see what happened and found me standing there about 2-1/2 feet tall with an ironing board propped on my head. She gasped and covered her mouth in shock then started laughing so hard she had tears in her eyes. The other time I did it was when my older sister introduced me to her friend. Now my sister and I have a long running joke because she's 7 years older then me but she's only 4' 9" tall. I'm 5' 10" tall. So she stands next to me and says "This is my baby brother". So that's what she did. Then I shrunk so I was shorter then her. Her friend didn't know what to think but she was definitely shocked. I think it actually scared her a little. Who would suspect someone is going to shrink? I also love the box methods on the DVD. The one that I think is called "360 degrees" is great for surrounded situations. What an intro! They'll definitely remember it. I'm not going to share exactly how I'm going to use the box method until I perform it at the Abbott's get together because I don't want anyone else to do it there. But I'll be sure to get a video of it when I do and I'll post it here. Another thing I'll add. Andrew put a lot of thought into this. If anyone tries to figure it out just by watching and tries to make their own. They'll be wasting a lot of time and money because it'll take a lot of trial and error to work out all the details Andrew has. All that time will probably bring them right back to having to purchase this to figure out what they are missing. When you get it you just have to put it together and start practicing. Andrew has done all the thinking for you. All you need to add is some presentation (which he also includes a lot of on the DVD). So save your time and money and just buy it. You'll have a lot of fun with it. I'll get a video up sometime soon. Ron Jaxon |

Wow! That demo was very, very cool. Andrew Mayne has certainly ceom up with some creative stuff over the last few years. I think this looks better than bisection as it is done without cover.

Here's some background info; Shrinker is based around an effect I developed for Penn & Teller in 1995. The method behind it is similar to a clown gag that goes back 50 years and was done by the Zucchini family. James Randi has a neat story about it in the 1950's. It's *much* older than that. For Shrinker I developed a specialized gimmick that made things much more practical and allowed for shrinking to take place with a proportional waist, thighs, crotch etc and no missing parts or extra pieces of costume.

There are many versions of sawing in half, but because it's such a classic, new versions are rarely called off as 'copies'. Effects like Shrinker are comparatively fewer in number and therefore, it would seem reasonable to peg new versions of the human shrinking effect as a copy.
Andrew's version offers far more versatility in its operation. You can perform this on stages around the world and not have to carry any large apparatus. And, as noted, this can also be performed on the street. Overall, Shrinker is just so much more organic with the visual, uncovered shrink and lack of any special (visible) props. Derek Merdinyan |
