I've been thinking about using the 6-card repeat in my show.
Which method is the most effective and most practical? How do you end it? |

I think kids will like Michael Finney's glitter ending as found on his dvds. As long as you don't mind about all the mess, it looks very pretty! He uses a buckle count, I'd say its the most practical for stage and parlor.
For a front room style party the gimmicks might be easier! I think the story would play really well. If you could get the child to throw away three cards and tell the story as if the magician taught you it would be really magical! M:C |

I say don't do it.
This is one of the most boring tricks there is. I love Michael Finney, and his version is funny, but that's him. He would be funny doing anyhting If your not Finney, don't do it. Randi |

Buy the new "UNO" 6 card repeat...that's your best bet! Fabulous effect with a great comedic series. Very visual and a killer ending!

You should read the chapter covering the Six Card Repeat in the book "The Wit and Wisdom of Mark Lewis." He gives you very valid psychological reasons for doing this effect, as well as a good presentation for the trick. And you don't have to be Michael Finney, either.

I do at every show. It gets lots of laughs. I have not seen Finney do it.
I go with the premise that I never learned to do the trick because I could not afford to buy the secret. I make up some absurd price during the routine.

Jake,
Get last month's issue of "Magic" and check it out. Gives you instructions for making the UNO type, and contact info for the originator so you can buy an original from him. It's in the Silly Billy column. Steve |

I haven't actually performed this trick in ages, but yesterday at a b-day party for young kids it went over really well.

I like Terry Lunceford's version where the cards are "accidentally" dropped as you tell a story.
Tarbell also has a version like that.

I do Terry Lunceford's version as well. Great way to load the extra cards using his gimmick.

I perform Terry Lunceford's "Six Card What?" too.
It plays very good with kids and adults! The key of this routine is the story you use. |

I wasn't really talking about Finney's whole routine...but he teaches you how to make a special card for the end where glitter comes out from the final cards...kids will like it.
Six Card What is funny...but I don't think kids will get the comedy! Great for family show, and yes, genius way to load the cards! Would be ruined if kids kept picking up the cards of the floor and handing them back to you! M:C |

I have a version coming out soon that is basically a six-card repeat with kids birthday cards. It will be part of a collection of Dollar Store Greeting Card magic on my site. I anticipate it will come online in about two weeks, if the wind don't blow and the water don't rise.
Besides the Six-Birthday-Card Repeat described above, the set will include Birthday Card Hippity Hops/Run-Rabbit-Run, Get Well Card magic for hospital shows, Cards with flower productions/Candy productions, Miser's Dream with Birthday Cards/Money cards and many others.

The glitter in Finney's routine may be more mess than you have time to put up with. Just a point.
The mere fact that you started with 6 cards, dropped some, discarded some and still count 6, sometimes 7 then do it all again is what makes the audience go wild. John |

Personally, I like David Williamson's Trick with Three Cards. (I think that's what it is called).
Similar premise and all you need is a deck of cards and an Elmsley Count. Andy

Just a follow-up post to let you know the "Six Greeting Card Repeat" is now available as one of the effects included with my Dollar Store Magic "Greeting Card Magic" e-book (on my site). The finale includes a transformation of the discarded greeting cards into a huge banner, OR a string of cards spelling out the greeting. You could also use this finale method to end a regular routine with the regular playing card versions of six card repeat, since an ending for the regular trick was one of the original requests that started this thread.
Other effects that made it into the e-book include: Mixed up Greeting Card, Musical Cards, Christmas Card Production, Birthday Card Hippity Hops, and Greeting Card "Sword" (it's not really done with a sword - that's part of the joke).
