I have a very easy version of the progressive assembly (Coeur d'Alene Assembly) in my ebook "Not Your Ordinary Card Tricks". No gaffs, no difficult sleight of hand, and it has an instant repeat kicker. The book is available for instant download on both the Card Magic page and Books page of my website.

I had that Kurtz manuscript years ago. I was on my way home from work one night, on a bus, and I was reading over it. I fell asleep on the bus and it got lost somewhere along the line. I recall really enjoying that effect.

I'm glad I did my own version with non gaffed cards and card displays that Gary doesn't know unless he read my book in French.
This being said, a high price is a nice way to keep something off the curb.

Hi Lawrence,
Actually Gary speaks French. I believe he lived or maybe still lives in Montreal. I would love to see or read your work on the progressive assembly. I worked out Gary's method and screwed it up the first time I performed it. There are a LOT of things to remember. Do you have any plans to make your book available in English? I doubt that my French is good enough to read it in the original. Although, I guess the vocabulary needed is fairly straight forward, using a more limited set of words that are needed to describe the necessary movements. Best, Mike

The right hand then takes up the master pile showing an indifferent card in it. The face up tabled ace is turned over using the Curry Turnover Change (switching it for the indifferent card of the leader packet) and replaced under the third pile. Now the four aces are in the leader packet. The magic is caused and the ace is shown to have traveled. This effect would gain from switching from the Curry Turnover change to René Lavand’s one handed switch or, even better Armando Lucero’s Sleight Two. Here are a couple of ace assemblies from Top Secret Stuff: The Impossible Travelers and Industrial Strength Aces.
There's a video of The Impossible Traveler at: http://www.mallofmagic.com/Videos/imptrav3.wmv Check it out. It garnered a round of applause at the Marlo table in Chicago WAY back. Mike

Mike,
This is a great routine taking the best of Open Travellers and of the Ace Assembly. Great ideas. I'm sure that it's difficult to perform perfectly smoothly, totally wiping out the tell tales like discrete longitudinal bending of the cards or the pulling down of the face down card for the Tent Vanish (a part where you could possibly alter the technique in stealing from the bottom of the packet before getting into Tent vanish position rather than during -you may want to consider Fred Robinson's Snap color change technique, replacing the snap by a pantomimed palming, from Peter Duffie's book p 156 which would supply you with a less contrived move). Great work though. Magico, Thanks for the reference. I don't understand how I could forget about this one that I know well, but this is exactly the reason for placing the list on the Magic Café. Thus in the name of all the members, please receive our gratitude. Etienne,
A few more for your excellent bibliography:- JP Vallarino - "Promenade" on his "Rendez-Vous" dvd, a progressive-type effect, which can be routined nicely with Hiro Sakai's "Wallaby" Also, Dave Campbell's "Highly Progressive Jokers" on p241 of "Legacy" has similarities to an aforementioned routine of Phil Goldstein. Finally, an excellent odd-backed progressive assembly was published by my friend Walt Lees, in his 2006 lecture notes, called "Off-Colour Solo Aces Again" which is an updated version of his assembly that was published in February 1975 issue of "Pabular". |

Hi bigdhrim,
Mexican Assembly is in Top Secret Stuff and was reprinted in the Card Corner Column in October 2008. It never seemed to catch on but I have always thought that it was a very good item. If anyone is interested in a pdf of the Card Corner column, email me at mpowers@mallofmagic.com and I'll send you the write-up. Mike
