In February 2000, Mike Durant reviewed my website in the Linking Ring because I had built, for my own use, an online test of my own, personalised memorised deck (which is merely a shuffled deck that I memorised).
There are two tests - from cards to positions, and from positions to cards. Somebody then asked if I could create similar tests for the Aronson stack, which I subsequently did. Later, I added test databases for the excellent SuperMemo software for Palm-based PDAs (http://www.mapletop.com/#SuperMemo). So, if anybody has a stack for which they would like equivalent tests creating, please PM me, but you will need to send me the details of the stack, as I only have details of mine and Simon Aronson's.

I was recently on the worlds biggest magic convention in Blackpool, England and I showed of with card effects with Joyal Stack for my magic friends. They were all amazed and they said; - "Excellent"!!!
It was so funny because they thought I used some kind of trick deck, heheh...of course this must be the only explanation when yo do miracles with a deck of cards! I do one routine from Darwin Ortiz new book called "Last Laugh" and it uses a memo stack and this routine is extremely heavy. Card Expert Darwin Ortiz uses his own memorized stack. His an expert and can do almost anything with a deck of cards. I can recommend Tony Buzan´s books if you want to improve your mind and memory. http://www.mind-map.com/ |

Even if you don't end up using Martin's stack, his book is a great resource.

Does anybody has any information on Mike Close's Invisible Deck effect with an memorized stack?
What's the exact effect? Can this be done with the Joyal stack? Please advise, Peter

Joyal Aronson, etc. It wouldn't work with Richard Osterlind's system, as this is a sequential stack, not a memorized deck (though of course there's nothing to stop one from memorizing it). It would certainly work with QuickStack, however (which is a memorized deck, and I don't see why Flip would imagine otherwise). Some people continue to be quite confused about the different methodologies for memorized decks; all these issues are discussed in a fair bit of detail in the essay, An Introduction to Full-Deck Stacks. mentalism101 asked: Quote:

Thanks Doug and Chris. I've PMed Chris.
Hope he's kind!! Thanks everone for the illuminating and open discussion. I've been meaning to get around to learning some kind of memorized stack for a while, so this thread has been an education. Thanks again. |

Would you say the calculations needed to calculate card location with "quickstack" are fast enough to perform Closes "Invisible deck"? To regurgitate some of the material from my essay mentioned previously, I note that a memorized deck is just that... memorized. The differences enumerated in the essay refer to the four techniques used to learn the stacks: rote memory, traditional mnemonics, rules, and algorithms. It's true that in the case of an algorithmic stack (such as QuickStack), one can simply learn the algorithm and never actually memorize the stack (this, in fact, is one of the benefits of this approach), but then it's not really a "memorized deck". Some memorized deck effects, of course, can not convincingly be done simply by using the algorithm (i.e., not "knowing" the stack). Exactly which effects these are is determined solely by the individual performer and his/her skills. ... Doug

By the way, one of the first effects I did with my "Six Kicks" stack was the M. Close Invisible Deck. I actually reverse my stack (so the #1 card is at #52, the #2 card is at #51, etc.--the memorized positions are then from the BOTTOM of the deck, instead of from the top) because it has an inherent feature that works well with the Close ID trick. Those who know my system can understand what I'm talking about.

I have researched many stacks, and this is undoubtedly the stack of my choice. Simple, direct, and deceptive. Thanks, Martin for your contribution.

For me, Martin Joyal's version is the memorized deck of choice as well.
Tonight I'm performing a very short close-up set at a new magic theater venue and I'll only have time to perform 2 or 3 effects. My opener will be a memorized deck effect I created using Mr. Joyal's stack. This effect is, in fact, the only effect I'd perform if I was told I could only perform one magic trick for the rest of my life. Learn a memorized deck and you'll have an extremely powerful tool at your disposal. Larry D. |

I read Martin's book 2 years ago and it is a very good book. The flow of the book is clear and ordered and it's easy to read. I pratice is stack once a week while driving to work. I love Aronson and Osterlind books, but I use Martin's stack with their effects. Also visit Martin's web site for a tons of used books for sale. http://www.joyalstack.com

One nice thing about the Joyal book is that it's the ideas, not just the stack that are presented. In other words, if you don't like the particular stack, you can still use the concepts to create a stack that's easy to remember.
I made my own stack this way. With a couple of faros, I can do Daryl's Double Dazzling Triumiph, or get 4 Aces 2nd from the top. A few more, and I can do Out of this World, or any other trick where reds and blacks need to be separated. For those of you who are interested, you'll need to download a stack viewing program, and then work backwards. For me, I started with all blacks separated from all reds, and then worked in the other tricks I wanted in my stack. Finally, you can rearrange the deck to fit some of the Joyal rules. I've got some that didn't fit a rule, and require brute memorization, but since there's not too many of those, it's not that hard to remember. -- Frank |
