Which group is doing things that you want to be a part of? The rest is secondary. |

Why not be a part of both? I've been in the IBM off and on since I was a teen, I'm currently and member, but just a couple of months ago I joined the SAM too. I'm excited about being in both organizations.

I agree with Terry...as usual. M-U-M and The Linking Ring alone are worth the price of national membership. Together, both national memberships are on par with the cost of one decent over-the-counter effect and you gain so much more. Why choose?

Just FYI to whomever,
I am intending to let both my IBM and SAM memberships lapse as each expires. With the current presidents leaving office, those loyalties will no longer will exist for me. With both magazines, Linking Ring and MUM, having gone very mainstream, neither holds much value for me and became a waste of paper and postage. With performer insurance rates spiraling and limited coverage, I can go elsewhere. With the lip-service that is paid to integrity and ethics, which are so easily bent to secure and keep member roles up. No one has presented me with any compelling or practical reasons for sustaining my memberships. And absolutely no one really cares what I have to say, or if I’m a member of the SAM or IBM or not. I don’t expect comment on this post, just thought I’d put my thoughts out. Magically, Walt |

Not true, Walt. I care, and I'll bet plenty others do too.
Both organizations are only as strong as its members. If you'd like to see changes made, you can be an agent of that change. You can: * Be a mentor, get feedback, and initiate and/or take part in meaningful projects with your local Assembly. * Connect with members worldwide via SAMtalking.com, our online forum. * Submit your ideas about M-U-M to editor John Moehring. * Raise your voice at a national council meeting. * Volunteer on the district or national level. * Take part in the Veteran's program. In my opinion, any of the above beats the alternative: a slow, sure drift into obsolescence. With each quiet lapse of membership, this organization fades into the dust of history. It deserves better. With your spirit and vision, it could be reinvigorated as a vital fraternity that educates its members, raises the creative bar, exerts a relevant cultural influence, promotes the art, and brings magicians together as friends and colleagues. Stick around and help, won't you? Best, Neil

Just for clarification:
In the past, Walt has been very active on SAMTalk and an active contributor to MUM. His heavy travel and performance schedule prevented him from being more active at a local or district level, but he participated when he could. This is much more than most. Tony |

A few of us did care about ethics, and did something about it. These days the trend seems to be more self serving. Give it time, everything cycles. I for one appreciate who you are, what you have done, and what you stand for. I won't argue your decision though. All I can do is thank you for who you are, a friend.

I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member. Forget who originally said that but I always thought it was funny. Actually I am trying to clear up my schedule a bit so that I will have the time to join IBM or SAM. I know someone in IBM in another State so that is my first choice but SAM sounds good too. I think it will come down to which group is meeting closest to where I live. Sad how gas prices are influencing so many things now...

This was, supposedly, the same club which wouldn't let him into the pool originally because he was Jewish (though not active). He replied that his son was half-Jewish; could HE come into the water up to his knees?
