Hello all! I have been going through old effects that I havn't used in a while and found Twilight. I started playing with it and realized that this is a beautiful effect. I'm not sure why I didn't like it when I bought it years ago, but now I think it has a lot of potential. Has anyone improved on this effect over the years?

No. But, I have had it for a long time now. It just wasn't what I thought it would be. It's been a long time since I've toyed with it, but it seems that I may be in the same boat with you. I,too,am open to any ideas.

I think I have a version that deals with a lot of problems the original twilight had.
I did not like the holding out in the beginning so I started working on that. I start now with both hands clean at the beginning, taking out one coin and go into the routine. I end with eight coins being produced (I double the initial four coin ending). If you want hints on this...think Todd Lassen, coindroppers and a close-up pad... Nah, it's not something I'd perform a lot, and neither very practical, but in terms of effect it is one of the most magical things I've created. I did the thing in the close-up gallery in the Castle last year. Just proves how I love this effect! (Paul's original effect can not be done in impromptu settings anyway, so why not improve the methods with some "special" thingies?)

Daniel Cros sold his improved version of Twilight using a little something extra, and many of the moves were quite good.
A book or three later (Close Up Fantasies, Finale?)Harris published a variation involving a flexible mylar surface and a more abstract effect of pulling off mylar circles. Our own Scott Guinn has a rather elaborate version, combining it with Ouelette's "Silver Passage"(?) in "Profiles in Coinage" There are several unpublished handlings around, as just about everyone played with this when it first came out. Here's a hint: Try it with the silvered side of a CD or a DVD. It's a natural mirror that everyone recognizes. Do it on your fingers, allowing the disc to slide between your second and third fingers until it's in a workable position.

Evan- from the back of the instruction book. "Twilight is an unparalleled close-up discovery that transports an innocent half dollar into the twilight zone of its own mirrored reflection. While in this dimension the coin is visibley condensed, dematerialized, recreated, and reproduced-building to the spectacular "Twilight" finale in which the mirror's reflected images are instantly transformed into four geniune half dollars!
Twilight is a close-up masterpiece that destroys an audience's ability to distinguish between illusion and reality. It is unlike a coin effect you've ever seen, read or heard about. Twilight is as close to real magic as you'll ever get!" Man, that's the first (and maybe the last) time I've ever done that! I hope I have not broken any laws! But, there it is. Lee

Funny thing is I liked the plot a lot and started toying with the routine. Only after seeing a friend of mine doing the sliding with the mirror very slowly I realised what an amazingly good looking effect this was.
Read the plot, you think: Cool! Read the method, you think: Oh, is that all.. See it performed well, you think: OH MY G... Which brings us to the one problem this trick has. To enjoy it for what it is, a spectator must be able to see directly into the mirror. Without this, the effect is lost and it becomes a "where do the coins come from-trick". Unfortunately, very few people can see the mirror illusion. Only the ones that are right in front of it! I remember when doing it in the Castle, people who were sitting in the middle of the front two rows giving me ooooh's and aaah's while the rest only reacted on the production of the 8 coins in the end....! Bummer! Though I had big plans and expectations with my version of Twilight I took it out of my repertoire after my performance at the Castle. In it's place came Explosion which is much more visible in those conditions and can be performed surrounded!

Right, and the same problem occurs with Paul Harris' Twilight Angels, an incredible routine for the people in front of you. Getting the card and mirror in the correct position is difficult enough, but moving from side to side to show everyone can be even more difficult, but again, Twilight Angels and Twilight are unbelievable routines when performed for a couple of people at a time.

Oh yes. Twilight Angels has the same "feel".
I do this one a little more though, because you do not need an extensive set-up and is done in the hands... Great trick to show someone "special".

As for the limited angles, try laying the mirror on its back (hidden coin underneath) and placing the loose coin on top of the mirror - practice will teach you the correct location. Comment on the dual reflection, pin the top coin in place with the your index finger and then slid the mirror out from under the top coin, replacing the reflection with a real second coin. Just two of the additions I made to the routine. Regards, Thomas wayne

Ben Harris has a version in print called "Twilight Visit". It is in his 1981 book titled "Magic from which Memories are Made!".

I'll tip this one:
Hold the mirror flat like Thomas mentioned. Put a shelled coin on the mirror. Make any comments on the double coin. Now perform the "deadlift" move from David Harkey'book Simply Harkey. You visually "suck" a mirror reflection out of the mirror... Has to be seen to be appreciated, try it!

I have played with Twilight on and off for a few years, and I've never once used it while table hopping or at a real show. I use tons of Paul Harris material, but Twilight is definitely not his best work.
