I sold the hell out of them in the late 80s when I worked at a magic shop.
I ALWAYS handed out the deck for them to look for their card and not once did a spectator notice the gimmick. The key is to keep the cards in order, they will cruise right by the gimmick every time! This is a great trick, no R&S, no Svengali principle. Once you know the secret you'll be able to use other decks, like the airline deck that motown mentioned. (Great idea motown!)

Thanks Vlad, after reading those postings, I actually can make this without any gimmicked deck or at least the basic method of it.

I highly Recommend The Locked Deck. With proper audience management you can show the deck without exposing the effect.
@TheAstonishingLarry - "I used to perform this all the time and got to the point where I even handed the deck back to the spectator to allow them to look for their card. I never had the gaff detected." This is a good example of audience management where you have gained the audience's respect and you have performed so well that the audience member does not even want to question "what just happened" |

Do you ribbon spread the deck face up after thge lock is removed or just tell the spec to look through?

Hey Vlad,
I have this deck and more to what my question should have been was "Do people who have this prefer to ribbon spread at the end" versus "Can You". I actually like this effect. Leads to all sorts of Houdini-esque presentations or a wide variety of other presentations. I think that the reveal being anywhere you can dream up is great. So many ideas. Dave |

I used and loved the locked deck back in the 80's. Always handed the deck to the spectator and they never found anything. Is a unique effect. It's great to be able to plant the vanished card somewhere cool ahead of time and then make it vanish and appear, ala the centavo from scotch and soda.

I have found zip-ties to work well. I offer the spec their choice of zip-tie from a bundle of say 50 of them.

I never liked the riffle force though. With this effect you are pretty much limited to using the riffle force.

What is the meaning (purpose) to lock the deck in vanishing the card?
I would place the locked deck under the mat and pull out the selected card placing it face down on the table. Next I would show that the selected card disappeared from the deck, and finally turn the selected card face up. The effect is 'Escape' if I do in that way. Why you need locking to vanish a card? The locking Mr. Kato, to my mind, just adds to the impossibility and presentation. Besides, as with Houdini, locks are associated with escapes and are thusly associated in the minds of spectators.
I think we as magicians often miss the mark of the simplicity and diabolical nature of these type effects. Its so simple to us and we've known for years that we overlook or underestimate the power this has with the laity. -To rowdymagi5- You should probably say that with this exact method and construction of the "locked deck" purchase (the marketed one) that you are limited to the riffle force with THAT method. You of course can use entirely more accommodating methods to your liking were you to structure the effect in a very similar YET different way and use a force/method of your choosing. |

In every demo of the trick on YouTube I saw before I posted the former post, such presentation was not applied to appropriately. So I posted as above. My mistake Mr. Kato, I thought you were condemning the lock instead of promoting its proper use! LOL

This was one of the first tricks I ever purchased years ago. The fact that is still exists shows its ability to survive the test of time!

I have used the locked deck many times. I do concur with my fellow magi that the 'gaff' is virtually undetectable with proper audience management. It is an effect which is simple to do and if properly presented can have a substantial impact on your audience. It can be performed completely surrounded. There is no roughing fluid involved, no palming, and no sleight of hand. The location of the chosen card is left up to your fertile imagination.

Stupid question perhaps: is this the same as the Tiny Plunger?
