Anyone have any input on Peter Duffie's newest -- Miraculous Minds: Scotland Goes Mental?
I'm sure it's stellar -- as is always the case with Peter -- but I'm wondering if anyone has any specifics on some of the (what sound to be fascinating) effects? |

Well, I can honestly say that the most fascinating are probably 'Mating Season' and 'Invisible Opener' and strangely, they are both by the same creator!
No, seriously, there are a ton of great ideas in here. In reading through it I came across so many principles that I had never enountered before. Stellar stuff as always from Peter. But, don't take my word for it - I'm biased! I'm sure many will chip in with the same types of comments. Basically, for the money, you can't go wrong! Dave.

Just ordered this one. Love big collections like this. For one you usually get a gem for your act and two: it inspires your original effects. I'll write a quick review once I've had a chance to go through it.

Me too, I really can't wait to lay my eyes on this ebook because first, I am shortage of mental materials in my act and secondly, I love Scottish's mind when it comes to magic.
The descriptions are very sound and I think whatever Peter release the materials are definitely worth of your money and attentions. I got it the other day - it really is great... and well priced...as in very inexpensive for a plethora of effects and essays. Plus some bizarre storytelling patter for some effects too (the Dead Pharaoh desc made me buy the book - but in the end- lots of great stuff)...
Warning: for the mentalists that abhor card effects - this manuscript is full of them...but there are non card effects too... and I love card effects so I am very happy indeed with this purchase... Plus, I like how this book is a "national" treasure of Scotland!

I read the whole book last night, without trying anything on anyone and without thoroughly examing all the pages, all I can say is I wasnt impressed, the effects all seemed to be filler and nothing I would consider adding to my act, and I didn't think the layout helped at all, poor quality al round to be honest, its a shame.

To each his own. I found at least four things I might use. Plus several other effects that got my brain churning. Very good value for the money, IMHO.

A great way to make an informed opinion ;-) I would surprised if any magic publication would give you a whole book of stuff to add to your act Jon? I'm with Cameron, 2 or 3 things I will use and a lot of ideas for "new" routines of my own. An that, IMHO, is good value. Villa |

Sure peter, I really wasnt suggesting that this is aweful, but from a semi-pro cloe-up mentalist, I found nothing to work with here, although I'm sure many mental magic people will feel far more inspired.
the layout reminded me of the ebook versions of the old hugard books, I found that the effects were crammed together one after the other rather than being logically seperated, this I found to be allot like a magic magazine, something I find difficult to realy get into, I'm not into getting small amounts of infomation from a book, I would prefer a thoroughly examined single effect. My biggest critiscm if I were pushed would be the lack of depth to each effect, the real secrets to effect don't lie in the method, they lie I believe; in the performers ability to turn these effects in a performance, all the nuances that create the effect. when the move is done what is the performer doing to move the audience focus, what is the feel or energy he is trying to create and how does the method interweave with the audience managmetn and presentation. Reading my original post I was certainly to harsh, the effect is good value, but it is to be remembered it is mental magic methods, and not much else if I'm honest. sorry for the poor spelling I am very tired, and I'm much more sorry for any offence anything I have said may have procured. I have just tried out one of the effects, the Devil one, on a "real" audience at a gig last night.
I do a "Tarot reading" routine anyway and this effect fitted in very well with a nice little kicker when the image appears on the card. Nice when you get a "no fu**ing way" reponse ! Villa |

Jon, it seems to me that your issue is more what each contributor provided rather than the actual layout of the ebook. Frankly, I don't see a more efficient way it could have been laid out.
One of my personal favorite effects in the book is David Lees "One From Three". A killer principle that has so many applications. Also, while it might not be "The Grail" (whatever the heck that would be anyway), Peter McLanachan's ACAAN is very workable in an impromptu situation. Clean, simple and direct. There's a lot of other stuff in there that's definitely worth checking out.

Call it prejudice but our Scottish brethren know their magic particularly when it comes to cards. You can't expect that everything in such a large collection is up your alley, but you are likely going to find two or three effects that you can either directly add to your repertoire, add to your knowledge of methods and techniques, or will get your creative juices flowing.
