Hi everyone
I posted the below at Myspace a few months ago, and since the book is out in the next few days I thought it would be fun to repost it here I you have not read the 6th book (Half Blood Prince) - If you have read it, or are aware of the big ending. Then please scroll down Enjoy! David Straitjacket ************************************************* Scroll down here....! Why David Straitjacket (sad Harry Potter junkie) believes firmly that Dumbledore is not dead. Hi everyone, I have had a few theories regarding the ‘death’ of Dumbledore for a while, so I thought I would share them since the new book is about to come out. That way, if I am totally wrong, no one will have forgotten and I can be subjected to the ridicule I will so deeply deserve. Alternatively, if I turn out to be right, this will all be fresh in people’s minds and I will then be hailed as a Harry Potter god. I love double edged swords So.. what happened on the balcony? Well, in the story, Malfoy has Dumbledore at his mercy, Malfoy hasn't the guts to carry out the killing blow. So Snape steps in an kills Dumbledore. Dumbledores body rises into the air in a light show, and then falls from the balcony, later to be discovered on the ground below. But what really happened? Well, put simply... With Snape standing over Dumbledore, and with a perfect witness in Harry, as well as plenty of death eater witness's to take the news back to Voldemort, The plan was carried out. Seeing doubt in snapes eyes, Dumbledore begged, partly dramatics, and partly to persuade snape to go through with the plan. Snape pulled his wand and said the words Avada Kadavara, a spell that only works if the person means it. The words are not enough on their own, (this spell also causes instant death, with drama, or any sort of light show) at the same time he says (in his head) a silent spell he created as a student at hogwarts. This spell is levicorpus, a spell which causes the appearance of death, as well as causing the 'body' to float, which is precisely what happens in this scene. It is broken when Dumbledore’s body floats off and falls over the edge of the building. Giving him ample time to use a spell of his own to protect from the fall, magic himself away, and leave a magical replacement in his place at the bottom. A dramatic light show accompanies the death. Not normal for the Avada curse. Many times during the book, especially this one, Dumbledore uses spells without his wand, yet he doesn't here, he makes no attempt to protect himself, nothing at all. He just lies there and takes it. Is this believable? We can take it as obvious that Dumbledore could fake his own death. Whatever happened after he fell off the balcony we can be sure there would be a way for him to do that. That’s the simple solution as to what really happened. But the clues are littered throughout the book. Rowling is a very clever writer, nothing she writes isn’t there for a good reason. So why then, did she introduce the three things below? Silent spells The Levicorpus spell The fact that the Avada Kadavara only works if the person really means it. Just saying the words and pointing the wand are not enough? Between then we get the effect listed above. There is no other part of the story which uses them at all. So why did the writer introduce them. There are introduced, and then forgotten. At least two of the above are quite major in terms of their effect on our understanding of the Potter world, yet nothing more is made of them at all. Rowling doesn’t write like that. Other things to consider: Why did Dumbledore take Harry along on a VERY dangerous mission, then as soon as the battle starts at Hogwarts he freezes him? Surely this battle was no more dangerous than the mission they had just returned from? Perhaps he didn't want Harry to try and protect him from snape and ruin the next part of the plan? Is it reasonable to assume that Dumbledore, or another teacher, would be so easily hoodwinked by Malfoy (creating the doorway into Hogwarts?) Just a few paragraphs before Dumbledores ‘death’ he says this to Malfoy. “we can make it appear that you are dead, no-one will ever know." Does he mean literally, people see the body dead, people go to the funeral and are convinced beyond doubt. Surely this is possible with his powers, and if he can do this for Malfoy, then he can surely do this for himself. Again, Rowling writes in a very tight, nothing wasted style (at least when it comes to the facts). This line is a clue. What would Dumbledore gain from Harry thinking he was dead? (assuming I am right)? Well, it would force Harry to go ahead with actions that would bring the prophecy to life. Harry has often seemed unprotected, yet Dumbledore has been guarding him, without Harry's knowledge. Protecting him from a distance. This gives a false sense of security to Harry's enemies, and allows Harry to make the decisions which will bring the prophecy about, without interference. Also, Harry has constantly lost his father figures, and always ended up stronger and more powerful for it. In every book Harry has had a father figure, he has always died, or been taken away. However, I actually don't think Dumbledore originally intended Harry to be ignorant of the plan. Which brings me to the next question. Why did Dumbledore really want Harry to study occlumency? Easy, so he could let him in on the plan, and other plans. Dumbledore has never been able to be truly honest with Harry, because Harry has a weakness for occlumency. If Dumbledore had let Harry in on the plan without Harry first learning occlumency, then the plan would have been ruined, and Snapes betrayal of Voldemort would have been uncovered. I think Snape perhaps, A: Didn’t want Harry in on the plan, or B: Just didn’t feel that learning occlumency would be enough to protect the plan from Voldemort. Which is why he never properly taught Harry. However he does want Harry to learn occlumuncy so he can reveal part of himself to him. A part it hurts him to hold back. See below Snapes treatment of Harry: I will go out on a limb here and say that Snape likes Harry (or at least respects him), and doesn’t want to treat him badly at all. He has to, if he doesn’t Voldemort will know. Remember Mrs Figgs (Harry’s neighbor) The squib who treats Harry badly so that the Dursley’s will let him stay at her house. Why would she just not reveal herself and tell Harry to pretend he hates being at her house. She says she hated treating Harry like that, but had to so he would go back to the Dursley’s with horror stories. But Harry could have easily lied to the Dursley’s. So this doesn’t make a lot of sense. Snape is in the same position here. He can’t treat Harry, or any of the none Slitheren students well as Voldemort will find out through Harry. No one wants to be thought of as evil, especially when it is an act they are having to put on. It must hurt Snape deeply to know what people think of him and I am certain he would love to change that opinion. If Harry had tried harder at occlumency perhaps he could have revealed that to Harry. It must have been infuriating that Harry put so little effort into the subject. It probably suited Snape this way too though (see above), so he would have been quite torn emotionally here. The unbreakable vow: Snape vowed to take over for Malfoy, if Malfoy was unable to carry out his task. People have taken this as proof that Snape is on Voldermort's side. If he breaks the vow he is dead. However this is assumes you know what the vow actually was. Rowling never tells us, people just assume it means to kill Dumbledore. If you stop thinking what the writer has cleverly led you to think, and work it out for yourself you will realise that Voldemort would never have relied upon Malfoy to kill Dumbledore. he is just a kid, and not even a good wizard! The vow must have been to do something else. Something Snape may well have done because it suited the plan. Again, Rowling never says what task Malfoy has been given, but everyone has assumed it is killing Dumbledore. But this just cannot be the case! Or maybe I just like Snape and want him on the side of good! If you like the above, please repost. Any comments or questions you have I will try to answer them. I spend quite a lot of my time on planes, waiting in hotel rooms etc, so I think I have had too long to think about this stuff. Have fun David Straitjacket

I've come to the conclusion that Draco Malfoy, and perhaps even his father, will "see the light". Draco, because he has been all talk and has now realized what being one of Voldemort's stooges really means and the cost to be one of his followers. His father, because he now knows that Voldemort is NOT a "pure-blood" wizard, but a "mud-blood", the very thing that Lucius hates!
I really think that the final battle will also involve Neville Longbottom, as the prophecy could have referred to Harry or Neville. While Harry has a visible scar, it should be remembered that not all scars can be seen. Neville's is because of the pain he's suffered due to the horrors inflicted on his parents. I really did find the psychiactric ward scene with Neville's mother to be both very telling AND very sad. I actually shed a few tears reading it.

I remember when Order of the Phoenix came out. Walked into a Sam's Club and found a couple pallets full of the books by the door, waiting to be purchased. Half the books were already gone! Needless to say, I also bought my copy at that time.
Can't wait to get the final installment. Can't help but wonder how Rowlings will spend her time, now that she's got plenty of it on her hands once the hoopla dies down.

Got my book at the midnight release - took only 45 minutes to finally get my hands on a copy. Read the first chapter before going to bed...what a start! I am going to savor this book, despite the desire to quickly read through it to see how it all ends, after all these years.

I finished the seventh book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows last night. I had several theories before I read that.
Everything I write below is from before I read the seventh book. I also theorized that Dumbledore was really still alive, but my son, who is one of the worlds leading Harry Potter experts along with about 100 million other adolescents, told me that J.K. Rowling had said in an interview that Dumbledore really was dead. I don't know if that interview really happened, but it was on some web site my son reads. Another of my theories was the Snape was really a good guy and against Voldermort. I also theorized the Draco Malfoy would turn against his Dad and become good. What actually happened is that Voldermort killed Harry, then became an evil emperor. Then aliens from the planet Zetar invaded earth and killed everyone, just so they could stop all the broadcasts of the children's show named Barney! The aliens were really angry too! No, I'm not going to tip anything here, you'll have to read it. Well, I will tip one thing, the last book is fantastic! I liked it more than all the other books in the series, and I liked the others a great deal.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

I wouldn't be able to choose a favourite. It's one story, actually. One Harry to rule them all.
Actually, I'll really, really miss all this, the waiting for the books, the excitement of discovering such a great plot. I have always been an avid reader, but this series was exceptional. |

Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.
