Title: Helter Shelter: The Movie
Medium: DVD Arena: Stage Available: Any shop, distributed by Murphys Magic Supplies I admit that I had no idea what to expect from this DVD. I’d seen Bizzaro on line over the years and he ranged from normal to cranky to outright out of touch at times. I had never met or spoken with him before and had no idea what type of show he did and since he was, from what I understood, into bizarre magick that left lots of doors open. Bizarre Magick to me is story based, uses items that are unique and not typically used in magic, and can range from the tongue in cheek to the guys who are very dark and refuse to drop out of character on the premises of the performance and sometimes off. It is often very entertaining and also often only entertaining to the performers themselves. I expected a very horrific DVD built around how to do a razor blade swallowing routine. Well, I was dead wrong. This may be one of the most out and out entertaining DVDs based on magic I’ve seen. To my surprise Bizzaro is a naturally funny performer and I liked him right off and he was likable throughout. He says he performs silently but I think he should start talking because he really has what it takes to make it in this business as far as personality. Needless to say I absolutely enjoyed every minute of this DVD. The production level is off the charts. Bizzaro had the location, a back story, and put a lot of thought into this project, which was shot at a place called The 13th Street Morgue. I have not checked out their website yet but I will shortly. It was well scripted, the camera work was good, the sound perfect. After watching a few DVD’s shot with home video cameras by people who just wanted to get a product out it is nice to see one where they care. This is the DVD based on the book, Helter Shelter, which I never heard of until it was mentioned on the DVD. What you get is the most complete instruction on how to do the old swallowing of razor blades then re-producing them on a string that you also swallowed. Most have seen this routine, kind of a hard core version of needle swallowing. I’ve seen it on the Potassy DVD but if you want to learn how to do the routine this is the way to go. Bizzaro goes over aspects of the routine not only had I never heard of but never even thought of, very interesting stuff. It should be noted that he uses regular razor blades, no dulling for him, and he shows some really cool switching devices and holders, all that good stuff. As a special guest he has Randi Rain do a version of the razor blades, also explained. While everyone knows, or should be told, that razor blades can be very dangerous and should be used at your own risk, Bizarro will make you want to start munchin’ blades tomorrow. If you are looking for the real work in swallowing razor blades, and I am sure you are for the Halloween season, this is the route to go. I apologize for any bad thoughts I had in advance about this DVD because, as I said, it is a real funny product that was well done all the way around. Congrats to all involved, it is a winner. |

Having not seen the DVD, I won't comment on its technical merits since that would be rather presumptious... but the title being used for such an effect is a little over the top for my liking. REad teh book, watch the movie and you will understand why the parole board still has "Charlie and his friends " locked up.

The title put me off at first too but are refering to reading and watching Helter Skelter about the Manson family? That doesn't have anything to do with the DVD in question. Personally I say let Chuck Manson out and follow him with a camera crew, call it "Life With Chuck", they can team him up with Paris Hilton.

Bizzaro explains why he named the booklett the way he did in his book. He is not into bizarre magick. His is a more physical comedy stage performer. You can see him perform on his site http://www.smappdooda.com He no longer can get on this board anymore but I'll let him know this is here. I am sure he will thank you for your kind words.

Thank you. I recall years ago he would talk about some pretty strange presentations and it sounded like bizarre to me! He is a very funny guy.

Ok...
First the name has nothing to do with Manson. It's Helter Shelter, not Helter Skelter. Helter Shelter is a name of a place that he stumbled on. But enough about that... Also... I have performed with Bizzaro several times and I can see for certain that he is not always silent. He does a few things to music, but not everything. He has a great stage persona, and that's what I like most about him. It was a fun video to work on. It doesn't look like it, but it was very cold that day. You should listen to the comentary if you haven't yet. You also get to see Bizzaro's fan switch. When it comes to switches, this is the best you will see. Randi and yes my version. But ignore me, I look like {r@p in it. |

I wish to extend an sincere apology to Bizzaro and all his associates. It seems some are greatly offended that I've never seen him perform, was not familiar with him as a performer, and that I was going by what he said on the video about performing silently. I should have made an effort to travel halfway across the US to see him perform before writing my horrible review of his product.

How in the world did you take offense to that?
There was nothing mean or sarcastic about anything that I wrote. If you read it that way, I appoligize. I was just letting you know that he does talk. You said you think he should, I was letting you know that he does. Nothing more. Randi |

Yes... please stop... there is no need.
He talks... I promise. Not sure why he even said that. He must of meant to say that he doesn't talk during the razor blade effect. Because come to think of it, I don't think I have ever seen him talk during it. But we do a variety show sometimes where he is the MC. He is very good at it. If you ever do get to talk to him, ask him if he likes Jello. (All who have seen Bizzaro perform are laughing right now) Randi |

Ok...so I just got my HS and I must say that it's one of the BEST DVDs I've ever seen! I find most magic DVDs are quite dull and boring...but HS not only teaches, but it entertains as well. I'm drawn too it. Every little nuance. I've watched it several times now to see what I missed the first time. Even if you HATE the Razor Blade Mystery...you should own this DVD!
Randi did a GREAT JOB on here too. Very cool stuff from the grooviest chick in magic! Bizzarro...well done my friend. Safe travels to Cali and I'll see ya when you get back!

You, sir, are in cahoots! It really is a fun DVD though. He did this one thing with a puppet theater looking set up that I thought would be great to set up on the street.
