You seem to have a handle on the point.

Any kind of businessman give his card to anybody and everybody, in any type of situation, everywhere. that would be the point of having business cards.
burger king advertises on the same channels as McDonalds. Coke and Pepsi, Bud Light and Coors Light. face it, business is business, competition is competition, and if you have a product that you think people should know about...you let them know about it. all of them. if this guy really was that big of a jerk, those people deserve to know there are others out there who are better worth their time and money. it is funny to think that handing out a business card is a sin... "I am not gonna put a gas station here cuz that guy across the street already sells gas." LOL drive around town. you'll see what I mean. |

And you guys wonder why magicians are thought of as hacks?
You don't recall the "insurance salesman" story from earlier in the thread? I guess I am tired of talking about ethics in a cathouse. I am sorry to have bothered all of you with a proper way to behave, I will see myself out of the conversation.

And you think if "The great Atzwhole" showed up and did his schtick as lyle said he did, that those people would ever hire a magician again.
No. what you are talking is monopoly which is not ethical in business as far as I know. (you'll be back.) |

You have caller ID (who doesn't these days). File a report with your local Police and have a TRO placed on the guy. There is a clear threat...

Lyle,
I think you handled things well but seeing what happened I wouldn't give my card out next time. I would of excused myself quickly and wished them a good time. I've been on both ends of that story. I have performed where other magicians were and they have come into my restaurant and performed (Yes Danny I know I don't own the restuarant but it is the restaurant I perform in) Here is one suggestion. I always make sure I introduce myself to the other magician and let him know my situation there. Maybe even invite him to stay for a drink after your shift if time permits. This gives you a better judge of the guys character rather then hearing it second hand from the customers. When I am asked to perform in a restuarant I always make sure I call the restuarant to make sure that my coming in there is ok. I don't believe there is any reason to take another magicians job away from him. If he was there first and has a problem with me then then I will honor that and walk away. There are plenty of fish in the sea. I have a similar situation coming up next month. A family has an annual party every summer they have the same magician perform for the kids every year. But after seeing me perform at my restuarant they want to hire me to perform for the adults. Sounds like this has been this guys gig for a few years. I will make a point of contacting him and seeing how he feels about me performing at the same party. We sound like very different performers as I seldom do kids shows so I think it should work out allright. We will see. It will be interesting. Outdoors with a live band too. yikes! |

Was the party in another room? Like a private banquet room??

Andrew,
Ehhhh....not really. The way the joint is set up, you've got several different vinets. There is a private banquet room in the back but this group was not back there. That area is usually reserved for business meetings and such. The restaurant always tells whoever is back there that if they would like my services to simply let them know or send a represenative out to find either the manager or myself to have me go back there. Usually, I just leave that room alone unless I'm asked to perform. The Restaurant has a main dining area and off the dining room (still open for anyone and everyone to dine) is a Library area. It was there that this group was dining. So just picture a smaller dining area just off the main dining room floor.

What does everyone think happened after the business card was given out, after the house magician left the group and after the magician arrived? I don't think the card was shown to the privately hired magician in an attempt to show who they could have hired.
We don't know if the party showed the business card to the magician or not. If they didn't the problem isn't that the house magician tried to steal a client, the problem is another magician tried to ruin another's (the house magician) credibility/act. Everyone gets so defensive here when we all don't know the facts. There's a lot that could have happened, but we'll never know so arguing over what we THINK happened will not get anywhere. All in all I think the house magician didn't do anything wrong by giving them the card. I think it was in an innocent manner and not, "When you're tired of this guy you hired give me a call I'll book you for $100 less" type of deal. Furthermore, I think the magician the party hired was so ticked that people were leaving. From the way the story escalates, it sounds as if the trouble starts once people are getting up and leaving to go sit dispursed among the restaurant (which does sound a bit strange) and wait for the house magician to come by. I also think it's off that the manager kicks the magician out and the party who HIRED him has no if ands or buts about it. I would think they would at least twitch an eye after hiring him. Maybe I missed something, when did it become wrong to give out business cards, even if someone is already booked with another act. I have gotten business cards from doctors even though I have one, bankers, financial planners, Veterinarians, Disc Jockey's, Florists, Cake People, Reception Halls, event coordinators, Sales People, everyone in business.
I don't see it as them trying to take me away from my the people I normally use I just see it as networking. I have had people thank me for giving them a business card when they had already booked someone, saw the person perform at another event and decided they weren't for them and then called me. Did I steal the client from that performer, no they choose to hire someone else because they didn't like that performers style. I don't think anything was done wrong, except the other guy acting the way he did. Just my two cents. James |

In genereal there isn't a problem handing out your business card. But handing your card to a group that is just about to get a performance from another magician is inappropriate. Even if the table is in the restuarant you perform in it doesn't matter. The guy was hired to perform for that group. There is plenty of work out there for all of us. There is no need to step on fellow magicians to get work. If your business plan entails getting work by stealing jobs from fellow magicians then I'm sorry you SUCK at being a magician.

The intent of a 'business card' is to solicit business, isn't it? That being the case then giving the card was in hope of being hired by the people down the road.
Look at it this way. These people were in a private room and they informed Mr. Lyle that they had hired a magician to work that room. At that point that room was established as the other guys performing theater and at that point any attempt to get business, which a card is designed to do, is poaching. Artist, which magicians are, are NOT the same as a business when it comes to sales attempts. Imagine you are a painter and you had hired a studio to show your paintings for sale. You mailed out information to the art collectors in the region, you ordered the wine and crackers to give out, you went in and set things up. The event comes and the place is packed with patrons of the arts, mixed in with them are other artist giving out their cards and just wanting to let the patrons know "I have some work I think you would be interested in at my gallery showing next Saturday, perhaps more interesting than these paintings by a guy I never heard of, but don't let me stop you from buying one of these for your garage". Would that be acceptable to you? For a magician his performing area is his gallery. |

There is so much going on here it is tough to figure out what really happened that night.
In this situation it would have been best to have introduced yourself to the visiting magician when he came in the door and set your boudaries. You both had a job to do that night and you both were getting paid (I guess). In a way his client was paying part of your salery that night too. I mean, they pay the restaurant, the restaurant pays you. I've worked a room with other magicians before and never got into a pi$$ing match. This guy had a big chip on his shoulder for some reason. You may have come out better on this deal but it doesn't sound like anybody really won and this other magician now has some very hard feelings toward you. Unless this other magician was truely just awful and his client was glad to see him go, I can't imagine the other magician's client being happy with the restaurant or you over this. When clients aren't happy, management isn't happy and that's never a good thing when it comes to your long term employment. Of course if the guy really was awful, hateful and spiteful and his client was glad to get rid of him, then you don't have anything to worry about -- except this nutjob hunting you down. Derrick |
