...I do Skinner's Ultimate 3-Card Monte and get complimented on my sleight of hand skills.
I don't perform professionally; I just do tricks for friends. And this 3-card Monte trick absolutely stunned my friends today. One of them complimented me on my skills. I felt slightly guilty accepting the compliment. I just had to tell someone. -David |

Usually the easier the trick and the simpler the plot, the better it is. I find out that I get rewarded more by the audience when I do easier tricks as opposed to harder tricks.

When people are puzzled as to method, then they tend to give more credit for difficulty and skill level needed than generally is necessary. After all you must be "very skilled" to have fooled them. Sort of an ego thing. Magicians have been cashing in on that tendency in people for centuries.
"Now here's the man with the 25 cent hands, that two bit magician..."

Congratulations! Take the compliment with a wink and a nod and keep going.
All the hard work involved to make your effects magical for your friends are paying off. Enjoy the reward. Mark. |

I think 'Skill' is including skill to use gaffs and gimmicks nicely.

It is still possible to screw up the trick in spite of its method (believe me!) - so congrats on a successful execution of a fantastic effect!

Ah c'mon David, it wasn't the compliment you felt guilty about... it was the money you fleeced out of buddies with the trick, right! Just messing with ya man, humbly take the kudos and show em another trick!

You are all absolutely right. And I did follow up with a very magical yet very simple trick and it floored them.
Thanks for being a great support group ;-) -David |

While I won't tell them how I did it, I remind them about the way that bar scams work. If it seems like the dealer is a fool and you can be outsmart them, he will outsmart you the instant you try to outsmart him. You'll have fallen into his trap. Of course, when I do my monte routine, I do one move that looks deliberately stupid and transparent but it's all a front. |

It's a strange thing really. If I use gaffs, which I don't so much anymore, I'm complemented on skill, as you have discovered; however, when I do work with a normal deck, I'm accused of cheating. Sometimes I play it off with the spectators, sometimes I don't.

I love Ultimate monte... I use it every show with a himber wallet. I enjoy the compliments I get for my skill... it's kind of a break for me in terms of mechanics.. I've been working hard on subtleties and details to make the effect the most deceptive it can be. This trick is considered easy but it takes just as much skill to pull this effect off convincingly. So enjoy the compliments as reward for your hard work on presentation... whether or not that's what the spectators are complimenting you on.
I would like to add a thought. ..this effect is great after a previous effect where skill is apparent. Perhaps poker deal effects because these things convince audiences you can do anything with a deck and have really good hands. They will apply this knowledge when you do a monte effect. So when you do ultimate monte... they will be looking for the move... of course there is no move so they will just think you aren't just good.. youre really good. Just thought I would add that.

Hiya
I do the Ultra Monte by Daryl which I am led to belive is fairly similar as the Mike Skinner Routine. This really foxes the spectators especially if you switch them out and then follow up with another effect using the real aces. The most important thing to remember is that Magic requires many skills and showmanship is one of them, so there really is no reason to feel guilty. Remember that a lot of the best ideas are the simplest ones, so keep going, have fun and improve all the areas of your magic performance. |

Relish the praise! You did exactly what "Magic" is all about. You entertained folks and made them feel good. Look at all the "Big Names" who use gaffed coins for big responses.

Yea you just have to have " No shame" and do it! Marlo once told me " If it where really Magic how would look!" That's what it's all about! Making it LOOK like Magic! NOT How you do it!!!
