How about using something like "Smash or Stab". The Spike (Fear) and the Smash (Led by Faith).
Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand!

Tell us a little about the show. Is it for kids or adults, and where will you be performing. Is it in a church?
I do a routine that could fit this theme, "Fear Factor" vs. "Faith Factor". I sometimes do a contest, like a gameshow (gameshow music, the works), where I have two volunteers, one of them is the children's pastor, the other is one of the beloved children's workers (an adult). Build up the suspense. The winner of the contest gets an amazing prize, the looser must face the seat of doom! Ask an impossible question, like "What is the distance from this church to the outer edges of the solar system?" Of course the worker doesn't know. The buzzer sounds, and he gets the seat of doom! In this seat he must endure the "commedy egg can routine", where there is presented the illusion that you have cracked an egg on his head. The only thing keeping the egg from his hair is a little yellow card underneath the cup. While the children's worker is sitting there in peril (and looking quite funny with a can on his head). Go back to your game show. Ask the pastor the same question. Amazingly, he knows the right answer (because you gave him the right answer before the show)! He wins the grand prize. As the winner he can choose anything he wants! He can pick a new car, a dream vacation, or a trip to Disney World. What does he choose? At the height of drama, he chooses to switch places with his worker. He could have anything, and he chooses as his prize to switch places. So, you don't quite understand, but you give him what he wants. Thank the worker for participating, give him a round of applause, and let him sit down. Place the pastor in this seat of doom, put the egg can on his head, and with drama remove the card. To everyones surprize, no egg, instead the egg has turned into a silk(a Jesus silk, if you like). This is a great illustration of Jesus taking our place (like the pastor took the workers place). It also describes how, when we demonstrate "Faith" in the face of "Fear", God show up and does "Amazing Things". The comedy egg can is one idea, but there are probably a number of tricks that can be used to create the right tension and drama. You can apply the same idea with the "smash and stab" trick that was mentioned above (depending on the age of the audience). |

Tony,
Thanks for sharing that. It is an incredible message and way to illustrate the message. Brett Bensley |

Tony and Ken those are some great ideas.
"you've guys done this before." The show will be for the whole church (kids to adults) I also will do an straight jacket escape. Message will be that no matter how impossible a situation is ... With Faith nothing is impossible.

Look at Mark Wilson's course on Magic...has a section on illusions that you can do, with as little as a sheet or cardboard boxes...

Terry is absolutely correct about the Mark Wilson Course of Magic. You can't get any "cheaper" or really more effective than the section in this book on appearances. I've personally used some of them and they will work!

You could use a mentalism type of effect and encourage them not to fear what they don't understand. Let God and through faith in Him and His protection for us keep us from fear.
Just a thought. GlenD

I saw a guy using a rat trap effect once. Can't think of the name of the trick. He put a pencil in the trap and set if off, breaking the pencil. He then asked a volunteer to put their hand in the trap. He set it off, but it did not move. He used it as an object lesson for trusting God because He would never hurt you.
